What the Big Zombie is in The Last of Us Episode 5?

Episode 5 of The Last of Us offers the most thrilling action scene of the series and introduces a scary new zombie kind. The Runners have been the primarily infected menace throughout The Last of Us, especially in the terrible opening sequence. However, Clickers were introduced in Episode 2 of The Last of Us, and they proved to be a much more formidable foe, showcasing the show’s diverse undead in all their gory glory. In the fifth episode of The Last of Us, a new kind of infection is shown for the first time. After Joel (Pedro Pascal), Ellie (Bella Ramsey), Henry (Lamar Johnson ), and Sam (Keivonn Woodard) make their way out of the city and into a more suburban part of Kansas City, they are trapped by a sniper. When Joel confronts the sniper, he learns that the sniper is working for the Hunters, a new enemy faction introduced in Episode 4 of The Last of Us. When the Hunters show up, Joel crashes their truck into a nearby home, triggering an explosion. The new zombie from The Last of Us episode 5 arrives with an infected swarm that sneaks up on Joel, Henry, Ellie, Sam, and the Hunters. What the Big Zombie is in The Last of Us Episode 5?

the-last-of-us-season-1-episode-5-bloater

Episode 5 of The Last of Us introduces the player to a massive new zombie species: a Bloater, a fan-favorite-infected monster from the first game. Despite the fact that a Bloater is still a part of this chapter, certain changes have been made to reflect the fact that it is now taking place in Kansas City rather than Pittsburgh. Rather than the sniper being located in the suburbs, Joel encounters a Bloater in the hotel’s sewers in the first game.  One other important distinction between this episode and The Last of Us game is that this is the first time Joel and Ellie have come across a Bloater. Bill’s hometown is the first location in The Last of Us where a Bloater is discovered. When Joel, Ellie, and Bill go to Lincoln High to look for a truck battery, they encounter a Bloater, which they eventually defeat. Because of the adjustments made to Bill and Frank’s plot in episode 3 of The Last of Us, this Bloater does not debut until episode 5.

Is the bloater the ultimate form of the infected In The Last of Us?

The Bloater in The Last of Us episode 5 stands out from the show’s other major infected subtypes due to its distinction. The root of the problem is the fact that each human host goes through unique stages of infection with the Cordyceps fungus. Runners appear anywhere from 12 hours to 48 hours following a first infection with the fungus Cordyceps in The Last of Us. Runners lose their higher cognitive abilities, turn angry, and are just interested in infecting others. Clickers are the product of the next stage of infection, which takes place a year after the initial infection. Fungal plates start to appear on the outside of clickers’ heads. In order to compensate for their loss of vision, Clickers have evolved a sort of echolocation. About a decade after the initial infection, when the fungal growth from Clickers’ heads has spread to cover their entire bodies, Bloaters are born. As a result, the Bloater’s entire body is covered in a thick, armor-like layer of fungus, making it extremely tough to kill. The greater power of Bloaters over Runners and Clickers is largely a result of the longer duration of their infection, as seen in The Last of Us, Episode 2. Thanks to their massive size, they are also incredibly powerful, and this, in conjunction with the fungal armor they wear, makes them extremely dangerous foes. Episode 5 of The Last of Us depicts this phenomenon when Perry’s repeated shots from his assault weapon fail to kill the Bloater.

Episode 5 of The Last of Us features Joel and Henry working together.  Henry’s remarks and the progression of the infection timeline in The Last of Us, Episode 5 hint at the arrival of the Bloater. Henry reveals to Joel, Henry, Ellie, and Sam that 15 years ago, FEDRA drove all infected from the city underground, while the group plans their escape from Kansas City. This not only clarifies the cryptic hint dropped in The Last of Us episode 4 but also shows how a Bloater could have survived underground for so long after becoming infected. This pays off in Episode 5 of The Last of Us when the Bloater is revealed in all its gruesome detail.
