Apple TV+’s Foundation is back with Season 3, and things are getting way more intense. The galaxy’s heading into the Third Crisis, and tensions are sky-high between the Galactic Empire and the First Foundation. But now, there’s a much bigger problem—The Mule has arrived. And yep, that means Gaal Dornick is finally waking up from cryosleep, ready to face the nightmare she’s been running from for the past 150 years.

Foundation Season 3 Episode 2 Recap
Gaal’s Back—And It’s Not a Warm Welcome
Season 2 ended with Gaal and Hari putting themselves into cryosleep, only waking up for short periods each year. Their mission? Train the people of the Second Foundation on Ignis. Hari taught psychohistory while Gaal focused on helping the Mentallics (aka people with psychic abilities) prep for future threats—especially the Mule.
The problem is, their once-a-year crash courses aren’t cutting it. So they switch things up. Hari stays awake to keep teaching, while Gaal returns to long-term sleep to be ready when the big threat comes.
Fast-forward 148 years. Gaal wakes up again—but this time, Ignis is practically deserted. Only two people greet her, including Preem Palver, the First Speaker. Hari’s still alive, but barely. He’s aged a lot and knows his end is near.
Before Hari goes, he gives Gaal a new Radiant—a powerful device that maps out a path all the way to the eighth crisis. After a final goodbye, Hari asks the Radiant (which shows up as Kalle) to take him to Oona’s World, where he can finally rest.
When Gaal visits his room the next day, he’s gone for good. Sad, right? She wants to honor him with a statue, but Preem surprises her—Hari already made one for himself. Turns out, he knew this day was coming long ago.
Now, just four years before the Mule shows up in full force, Gaal and Preem start prepping for what’s next. They’ve already spotted a timeline disruption, something even Demerzel warned about earlier.
Empire Drama in Trantor
Back in Trantor, things are falling apart. Demerzel brings news of a major issue seen in the Prime Radiant. While Dawn tries to understand it, Day couldn’t care less. He’s basically ready to give up on the Empire and humanity altogether.
Day’s attitude? “Let it all burn.” He even tells his brothers not to come looking for him if things get worse. Meanwhile, Dusk is losing hope too, wondering if his entire life was pointless.
Desperate to stay alive, Dusk asks Demerzel to cancel his execution, thinking his knowledge might still help. But nope—she’s just a machine on a timer. She says she can’t override his fate.
Meanwhile, Day’s off gambling with soldiers, doing drugs in front of them, and chatting about their personal lives like they’re old friends. Later, he tells his lover, Song, about the galaxy’s looming crisis and drops a bombshell—he wants to ditch the Empire and move to her world, where he can just vibe out on spore drugs forever.
But things get awkward when Dusk shows up. He starts off all friendly but eventually asks Day to spare his life. Day refuses, calling them all puppets—“rag dolls dressed as kings.” To prove a point, he slashes his wrist and shows how they’re not even capable of dying like real humans. Brutal. Song looks horrified, and Dusk is crushed.
The Mule Takes Over Kalgan—And It’s Chilling
While the rest of the galaxy panics, the Mule is loving his new role as Kalgan’s ruler. He gives a terrifying show of his psychic power, turning Skirlet, the Archduke’s daughter, into a mindless follower willing to shoot herself if it pleases him. He brags that he could brainwash everyone… but says they’ll come to love him eventually. Yikes.
Meanwhile, newlyweds Toran and Bayta Mallow are honeymooning on Kalgan, totally ignoring the chaos. Even though Toran’s descended from legendary Trader Hober Mallow, he couldn’t care less about politics. He just wants some sun—too bad the Mule’s ship keeps blocking it.
Their vacation gets cut short when Captain Han Pritcher shows up. The Mule’s throwing a party to celebrate his reign, and thanks to their family name, the Mallows are on the guest list. The captain tags along, hoping to learn more about the enemy.
Dusk’s Weapon, Dawn’s Robing, and a Secret Connection
Back on Trantor, Dawn is getting ready for his robing ceremony, which Day refuses to attend. So Dusk steps in and gives him a crazy parting gift—a planet-destroying weapon called Novacula that harnesses black hole energy. It’s basically the Death Star on steroids.
Dusk insists it’s only for emergencies, but come on… that thing’s dangerous.
Later that evening, Dusk and Dawn have dinner with Ambassador Quent to talk about the Mule. Dawn’s clearly worried, and it makes Quent question if the First Foundation is underestimating the threat.
When Dawn leaves, he secretly contacts Gaal Dornick using a hidden device. He tells her he’s been waiting for her message since he heard the Mule was coming. Gaal’s response? “Good. Now do something useful.”
