Martha’s nightmare is depicted in one of the first sequences of the fourth episode. When she goes to investigate, she hears water running in the bathroom. As she is about to open the mirrored door, Peter, the bodyguard who had her kidnapped and attacked her, bursts in, throwing Martha to the ground. While John sleeps sweetly beside her, she wakes up in a cold sweat. He insists her see Dr. Feldman the next day for “her nerves.” the Mitchells try to put their political past behind them, but the press continues to pursue Martha for information concerning her accusations. As she walks out of her building on her way to the doctor, it’s evident that John urged Martha not to speak to the media. Dr. Feldman notices Martha’s bruises, but she claims they are the result of a miscommunication with a bodyguard. Later, she has lunch with Winnie (Allison Tolman), and viewers see an article suggesting Martha’s account of her assault is false. Peter is attempting to discredit Martha by speaking to the press. Martha informs Winnie that her doctor has prescribed a sedative, but Winnie believes that this is not the solution.
McCord talks with Liddy and Hunt, stating that he believes President Nixon should assist them because they were, after all, the ones who committed the crime on his behalf. Liddy, on the other hand, waterboards McCord and threatens him with not speaking to any higher-ups because he believes what they did was for the greater good. During the trial, the judge informs the men that he knows they did this on behalf of someone else. He convicts them to a maximum of 30 years in prison, but he also gives them two months to appeal the verdict. This gives the males time to consider if they want to reveal any additional information. Regardless matter how people feel about the actual John Dean, Dan Stevens’ portrayal of Nixon’s counsel captivates spectators in practically every scene. Dean makes clumsy attempts to reconcile with Mo.but they fall short. Dean makes his first call to Mo in the episode just after she slashes her thumb, prompting him to launch into a spiel about the greatest can opener on the market. When he inquires about her weekend plans, she tells him she is going sailing.
Later in the episode, he arrives at her home with a Cuisinart food processor, rather than a can opener, and she slams the door in his face. While Mo observes from the window, he sits outside her house, regaling the capabilities of the kitchen tool. When he tries to call her again, she tells him flat out not to call her again. Aside from his domestic problems, he’s also dealing with the Watergate probe. Martha discovers a drunken Mitchell on the floor in their bedroom after his birthday party while watching Nixon on TV in one of the last moments. Mitchell claps for the president, implying that he regrets his old life despite his protestations that he is pleased to be free of politics.
