In this episode, our protagonist pays a visit to Bernard (Tim Robbins) in order to gather more information about Juliette. She needs to make sure that Juliette is the right fit for the important role of silo custodian.

In a dramatic turn of events, Bernard reveals to Ruth and Deputy Marnes (played by Will Patton) that Juliette is a thief who has stolen supplies that rightfully belong to the IT department. As the tension mounts, our protagonist suggests Paul Billings as the perfect successor to Holston (David Oyelowo). However, Ruth remains steadfast in her support for the person who was in charge of the position, leaving our hero at a crossroads. The pressure mounts for her to select Billings as the new sheriff, with the judicial department leading the charge.

In a dramatic turn of events, Sims extends an offer to Ruth to speak with his superior in hopes of swaying the mayor’s opinion on Billings. As Ruth grapples with her situation, she and Marnes rendezvous with her father to gather intel on the engineer. As Ruth looks on in disbelief, she can’t help but wonder why a doctor’s daughter would choose to leave the safety of her family and pursue a career in engineering.

In a surprising turn of events, Juliette’s father proves to be of no assistance, leaving the mayor with a difficult decision to make. Ultimately, the engineer is chosen over Billings. In a moment of conflict, Juliette grapples with the decision of whether or not to agree with the sheriff’s place. She ultimately decides against it, as she cannot bear giving up the generator that serves as the lifeblood of the silo’s inhabitants.
