HBO’s official synopsis is as follows:

We Own This City chronicles the rise and fall of the Baltimore Police Department’s Gun Trace Task Force and the corruption and moral collapse that befell an American city in which the policies of drug prohibition and mass arrest were championed at the expense of actual police work.

According to a news release from HBO, the police force struggled in the 2000s to respond to crime with real police work, instead of focusing on mass arrests and drug wars. Despite several indicators of corruption at the time of the GTTF affair in 2017, Baltimore police officials believed that any unit that routinely removed firearms and drugs off the streets needed to be championed and protected.

Sgt. Wayne Jenkins is played by Jon Bernthal, Sean Suiter is played by Jamie Hector, Daniel Hersl is played by Josh Charles, and Nicole Steele is played by Wunmi Mosaku. A fictional drama that followed the Baltimore Police Department, some 20 years ago. We Own This City reunites Pelecanos and Simon, who previously collaborated on The Wire. Some of the new cast members will reprise their roles from the 2002 performance.
