The Flash Season 8 Episode 9 Recap

Iris has been meeting secretly with Deon, who has been treating and diagnosing her recent memory difficulties using his connection to the Still Force. Deon deduces that Iris is suffering from time sickness, albeit he has no idea when the symptoms started or how severe they are. Iris reconnects with Sue Dearbon at work, who has refocused her efforts on operating her family’s business after dissolving the Black Hole syndicate while her parents were incarcerated for white-collar crimes. When Iris discovers that a metahuman capable of phasing through walls has been detected around the West Coast region, she chooses to accompany Sue to Coast City. Chester is spooked when he sees images of the victims as Team Flash continues their quest for the unknown pyrokinetic metahuman incinerating victims across Central City.

When Barry and Chester arrive at the scene of the latest murder, they notice an odd black flame engulfing the victim, prompting them to collect a sample for further research in order to put an end to the murdering spree. Chester begins to have intense nightmares of the black flame destroying S.T.A.R. Labs, causing the black flame to grow stronger in the real world. Allegra (Kayla Compton) tries to reach out to Chester to find out what’s bothering him, but the black flame strikes and escapes, despite The Flash’s best efforts. When the two women hunt down the wall-phasing metahuman Tanya in a neighborhood coffee shop, the young superhuman destroys Iris’ tracker before fleeing, Sue knows something is amiss with Iris. Tanya was abandoned by her mother, which Iris and Sue discovered when they intercepted her at her house. Sue offers Tanya a place to stay while she gets her bearings and gains a better understanding of her abilities, and the two promise to aid her. Although Allegra is suspicious, Chester admits to Allegra that the figure they saw in the black flame was a ghost-like his late father Quincy P. Runk.

As Barry and Frost work to put out the fire elsewhere in S.T.A.R. Labs, Cecile notices that it’s being fuelled by grief from others in the area — and that it’s now being fueled by Chester’s unresolved anguish over his father’s death. This culminates in the black flame assuming the shape of Quincy and requesting that Chester touch him, claiming him as its next victim. Allegra is able to bring Chester back to his senses by reminding him of his father’s love for him and convincing him to reject the fiery spectre in front of him. The black flame flees S.T.A.R. Labs after Chester rejects it, and Team Flash discovers the flame is the metahuman they’ve been looking for all along. The metahuman serial killer thrives on raw anguish and is on a mission to discover more victims, but Team Flash is determined to stop them before they can add to their body count. Iris agrees tacitly to Barry’s suggestion that she stay in Coast City for the time being in order to keep safe. Deon reappears shortly after this choice, concluding the show on an unsettling note by revealing Iris’ prognosis.
