Coach Kenny was having family problems, Coach Mac was named interim head coach again. Spencer paid close attention as he praised Jordan as the main leader in front of the media, which set the stage for drama within the team. Despite this, Spencer stayed calm and helped Jordan, who was dealing with Layla’s continued problems after the traumatic break-in at her lounge.

Jordan (Michael Evans Behling) tried to get Layla (Greta Onieogou) to go back to seeing a doctor, but she refused, so their conversation turned to her emotional health. Spencer and Olivia were both upset when Ashley showed up again, but Olivia set limits out of respect for Spencer’s wants.

Spencer (Daniel Ezra) started the big playoff game on the bench, which was Coach Mac’s choice. It put him out for a while, but it didn’t stop him. Jordan had a hard time during the whole game because he was thinking about Layla’s absence. Spencer saw what was going on and stepped up, offering a strategy play that helped GAU win a hard-fought game. Coach Mac finally recognized Spencer for his hard work.

After the game, Jordan rushed to talk to Layla in the lounge, where she pushed for a better understanding of her needs and stressed the importance of mental health. Olivia helped them talk to each other again, which helped Layla understand Jordan’s point of view. Fortunately, they caught the person who broke into her room, which was a good thing. Jordan and Layla promised to talk to each other more and let each other know about big choices.

The GAU team invited Spencer and Olivia (Samantha Logan)  to their house for a party on New Year’s Eve, which ruined their plans for a quieter night. Olivia and Spencer were trying to get away when Ashley showed up out of the blue with a picture of Olivia. it made Spencer very nervous right away.  Ashley told Olivia how he really feels about her after a long time, but Olivia confirmed her love for Spencer. Spencer and Olivia took advantage of the break to spend some alone time together, giving each other a meaningful New Year’s kiss amidst the chaos of the party.

The James boys got some good news when Dillon found out he got into the Boston School of Arts. At first, Grace insisted on going with him, but Dillon wanted to go by himself. They came to an agreement: Grace would only stay in Boston for one day instead of seven.

Patience was having a hard time with Miko, which turned bad when she stole Layla’s gun. Preach and Coop stepped in and told her to trust that Laura and Coop will look out for her. After giving it some thought, Patience chose to believe the legal system and testify in her own defense at the trial. Lastly, a side story about Asher (Cody Christian) showed that he wants to play football again after getting permission from his heart doctor. Asher picked his family over football in the end, but it’s clear that he is having a hard time with this decision.
