Vanessa Anne “Van” Palmer played by Lauren Ambrose or Liv Hewson (as a teenager), has a sad ending in Yellowjackets Season 3, Episode 9 titled (“How The Story Ends). Van has been a strong survivor throughout the series, getting through a lot of hard times. He has defied death time and time again, faces her darkest moment yet. As the past and present collide, the question lingers—did Van make the ultimate sacrifice, or is there still hope?

VAN’S STRUGGLE IN THE PRESENT
In the present, Van is fighting cancer that will kill him soon. She’s not strong, but she fights to stay alive. Tai, played by Tawny Cypress, and Misty, played by Christina Ricci, stay with her. Van sees herself when she was younger, telling her not to give up. She finds the strength to keep going even though she is sick.

VAN’S FINAL MOMENTS IN THE PAST
In the 1990s, Van is still trying to get the group to follow him. Melissa tries to run away, Van, Tai and Misty catch her and bring her back. But things go badly when Melissa messes with the fireplace flue and carbon monoxide gas fills the cabin. Shane (Melanie Lynskey) and Tai pass out and have trouble breathing.
Van gets away to get some fresh air and then comes back to save them. She thinks, though, that the Wilderness wants a sacrifice. She thinks about killing Melissa because she thinks it might help her get better. But just before the end, she thinks twice. She just can’t do it.
When Melissa sees her chance, she grabs the knife and stabs Van in the chest. Van falls down and starts bleeding. Tai tries to help right away but it’s too late. Van dies, which shocks everyone.
Van has a vision of herself on the crashed plane, watching her life play out as she dies. She was told by her younger self that she had to be the hero. It was her job to save them.
IS VAN REALLY DEAD?
Yes, Van is gone. There is a big change in the story after she dies. She gave up everything to protect her friends and was kind until the very end. Tai, Shauna and the rest of the group will miss her a lot.
Van had always been the team’s heart. She had faith in the wilderness, in being able to survive, and in keeping the people she loved safe. Her story is over now, which breaks the hearts of her fans.
