In this alternate scenario, our protagonist envisions himself opting to remain with Paul rather than embarking on the ill-fated journey with the Yellowjackets. Instead of receiving the devastating news of the crash firsthand, he would have been spared the heartache and learned of the tragedy through the media. Despite this, he found a connection with Natalie and saw her as a kindred soul. He pleads with Nat to join him, but she’s fully devoted to the wilderness by now. She refused to take shelter with him in Javi’s cave for the remainder of the winter. “You don’t fit in here,” she declares to him, mere hours before assuming the mantle of leadership for the Yellowjackets.  As Ben gazes upon Nat’s ascension, his face contorts with terror.
