What happened to Coach Ben?

In the second season, we see the beginnings of a deep-seated animosity between Ben and the rest of the survivors. As the season progresses, Ben’s hunger takes a toll on him, causing him to experience vivid hallucinations of his clandestine lover, Paul (played by François Arnaud), a talented writer residing in New York. In this alternate scenario, our protagonist envisions himself opting to remain with Paul rather than embarking on the ill-fated journey with the Yellowjackets. Instead of receiving the devastating news of the crash firsthand, he would have been spared the heartache and learned of the tragedy through the media. As the group of survivors grows more savage, Ben starts to fear for his life. Unbeknownst to him, his own sanity is slipping away, but in a way that sets him apart from the rest.

In the gripping season 2 finale of Yellowjackets, our heroines were forced to flee their wilderness abode as flames engulfed their sanctuary. However, amidst the chaos, one member of the group was conspicuously absent: Ben. In a dramatic turn of events, Ben ignites the cabin in flames. His fear of the team’s monstrous transformation, which had stripped them of their humanity, had reached a boiling point. As the days went by, Coach Ben’s mental state was deteriorating just like the rest of the group. Right from the start, he established his boundaries and emphasized that cannibalism was not an option.

As Ben stumbles upon Javi’s subterranean lair and realizes that he is now the next meal on the teenage cannibal gang’s menu, he is eager to make a quick escape. Despite this, he found a connection with Natalie and saw her as a kindred soul. He pleads with Nat to join him, but she’s fully devoted to the wilderness by now. She refused to take shelter with him in Javi’s cave for the remainder of the winter. “You don’t fit in here,” she declares to him, mere hours before assuming the mantle of leadership for the Yellowjackets.  As Ben gazes upon Nat’s ascension, his face contorts with terror.

As Javi’s lifeless body was being dissected before his very eyes, Ben reached his breaking point. The one person he had connected with had turned to the dark side and haunting visions of what could have been plagued him. To make matters worse, the team was now turning on each other, and Ben could no longer stand idly by. In his eyes, the team had crossed the point of no return and transformed into a savage cannibalistic group, exhibiting a disturbing propensity for brutality. In a dramatic turn of events, our protagonist took matters into his own hands. He frantically searches for matches to ignite a fire in his recently acquired abode. Although the culprit is never shown igniting the flames, the striking of the match leaves little doubt as to their responsibility. Ben set fire to the cabin in order to protect himself. Now, he’s on the run and seeking refuge in Javi’s cave.

The betrayal from the team’s former authority figure is a game-changer for Season 3. It’s a particularly ruthless move that will have a significant impact. As Camp Yellowjackets is now an open-air experience, the team must find a way to survive the remainder of their time in the wild.
