Why Justified Relocated to Detroit for City Primeval

A brand-new limited series “Justified: City Primeval,” which stars Raylan Givens from the neo-noir Western criminal drama “Justified.” The original Raylan Givens, a modern-day cowboy who dispenses his own brand of justice in Harlan, Kentucky, television series, which aired on FX for six seasons and ended in 2015, was portrayed by Timothy Olyphant.

In the new limited series, Raylan played by Timothy Olyphant is in a different location—outside of Kentucky—and is involved in a stand-alone story that isn’t overly dependent on the characters or storylines from the first series. Some fans of the original “Justified” series may have been perplexed by the decision to relocate “Justified: City Primeval” from the familiar hollers of Harlan County, Kentucky, to the urban setting of Detroit, Michigan.

Why Justified Relocated to Detroit for City Primeval?

With Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens navigating the nuances of his difficult hometown, the show’s setting in Harlan County was a crucial component of its rich storytelling. However, when one considers Elmore Leonard’s literary background, the cause of the change becomes apparent.

The popular crime author Leonard was a native of Michigan, namely Detroit, whereas the television show “Justified” was linked with Kentucky. His hometown frequently appeared in his writings, such as in the “Motor City Five” mystery thrillers. The title and premise of the miniseries “Justified: City Primeval” are taken from Elmore Leonard’s book “City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit,” which captures the unique ambiance of the Motor City.

The show successfully merges the two worlds by incorporating Raylan Givens from television into Leonard’s Detroit-based story. Detroit already had a role in the original series due to its connections to organized crime. As a result, “City Primeval” expands the Justified universe while paying tribute to Leonard’s literary legacy.
