The Third Episode of Season 2 of The Last of Us goes deep into what happened after Joel’s death to show how much his loss affects the people who loved him. Ellie (played by Bella Ramsey) gets a lot of emotional screen time in this episode, but Joel’s brother Tommy (played by Gabriel Luna) also has a powerful scene.
At the start of the episode, Tommy visits Joel’s body for what appears to be the first time. It’s a scene filled with heavy silence. A resident from Jackson hands Tommy a cloth and a bucket of water. Quietly, Tommy begins to wash the blood from his brother’s arm. As he does, he notices Joel’s old watch — the same broken watch Joel wore through all of Season 1 — still strapped to his wrist.
Tommy pauses, staring at the sheet covering Joel’s face. In a voice choked with emotion, he says, “Give Sarah my love.”
THE LAST OF US SEASON 2 EPISODE 4: NEW IMAGES AND POSSIBLE TITLE TEASED
For those who may not remember, Sarah (played by Nico Parker ) was Joel’s daughter, who tragically died at the start of the outbreak in Season 1. She had fixed Joel’s watch as a birthday gift for him, just before everything fell apart. That watch became a symbol of everything Joel lost and everything he fought for afterward. Seeing it now, broken and still with him even in death, brings everything full circle for Tommy.
People who saw the episode are reminded of how much Joel carried with him, both physically and emotionally. It is a moment that connects the beginning of Joel’s journey to the tragic conclusion of his journey.

In a later part of the episode, Ellie gets a quiet surprise. Tommy gives her Joel’s old watch as a gift to honor his memory. Ellie feels even closer to the man who meant so much to her because of this small but powerful act.
It hurts Tommy and Ellie to lose Joel, but this episode shows that their love for him and memories of him will live on. Joel, played by Pedro Pascal, won’t be in the show as much, but he will still have a big effect on the story and the characters.
The third episode of the second season of The Last of Us demonstrates that the show is prepared to move forward with Ellie’s story while still paying tribute to Joel’s legacy. The memory of Joel, as well as his watch, is something that Ellie takes with her as she moves on to the next stage of her journey.
