The Last Of Us: Who Is Hanrahan? Alanna Ubach’s New Character Explained

Hanrahan is a new character introduced in THE LAST OF US Season 2, Episode 4. She is played by Alanna Ubach. What makes her unique is that she doesn’t appear in the original video game. Hanrahan is created just for the HBO show, which means both longtime fans and newcomers are learning about her at the same time.

She appears during a flashback set in Seattle in 2018 — before the city fell under full control of the WLF (Washington Liberation Front). At that time, FEDRA still had control, and Hanrahan was part of a small underground group that would later grow into the WLF militia.

The episode begins with a flashback to 2018, a time when Seattle was still controlled by FEDRA. During this time, the WLF existed only as a secret resistance group. In this scene, Isaac is a FEDRA sergeant traveling with his fellow soldiers. Their transport vehicle stops in front of a school bus used as a blockade. A group of unarmed civilians approaches, and leading them is Hanrahan.

Their exchange is brief but meaningful. Hanrahan asks, “You Isaac?” When he confirms, Isaac asks the same in return. After confirming her identity, Isaac takes a shocking step — he throws a grenade into the back of the transport, killing all his FEDRA companions. He then shoots the driver and turns to Hanrahan, who welcomes him to the WLF with the words: “Welcome to the fight.”

This short introduction says a lot. Hanrahan clearly held a leadership role in the WLF during its early days. It’s her who orchestrates Isaac’s defection — a major turning point in the WLF’s growth from an underground movement into a militant force. Her confidence and control in the moment suggest that she was a respected figure and possibly one of the founders of the group.

Though we don’t see her again in the episode, her introduction raises questions about what happened to her between 2018 and the present timeline. Does she still have power in the WLF? Has she stepped aside now that Isaac is in charge? That remains to be seen.

Adding Hanrahan to the story allows the show to explore the early days of the WLF in a way the game didn’t. It helps give more depth to Isaac’s background and shows how he defected from FEDRA. It also gives viewers a new figure to watch as the story unfolds.

For now, Hanrahan remains a mysterious but vital piece of the WLF’s history.
