Pam & Tommy Episode 5 Recap

Pamela Anderson (Lily James) and Tommy Lee (Sebastian Stan) are put under pressure after their sex tape makes its way from the dark reaches of the internet to the mainstream media. The episode began in 1996, with a Los Angeles Times reporter learning of the tapes’ existence and attempting to pitch a piece to her editor, who dismissed the storey as gossip and refused to believe it met the standards of credible journalistic reporting. Pamela is ‘distracting’ herself from her sad miscarriage revealed in episode four, as well as the recording, by conducting promotion for Barbed Wire, telling the journalist that she ‘doesn’t want to linger on any unpleasant things in the past and move on.’

Meanwhile, Tommy is coping with his bereavement by drinking, partying, and fighting to numb his agony, putting Pamela in crisis discussions with her publicist Gail Chwatsky (Mozhan Marn). Pamela then sits down to talk about her sex tape and discovers that it’s starting to go viral online, sparking a heated argument with Tommy later that evening, in which she accuses him of profiting from the video’s distribution. Rand Gauthier (Seth Rogen) is nowhere to be found as the couple’s private investigator continues to look for the source of the tape’s initial leak. Rand Gauthier (Seth Rogen) abandoned his residence shortly after wiping out the porn studio of any hard copies of the footage. Miltie (Nick Offerman) also appears to be missing from the episode. Tommy’s bad luck continues to worsen when he discovers that his record company is losing interest in Mötley Crüe and is instead focusing on a viral video.

The LA Times reporter, undeterred by her editor’s first rejection, keeps looking for a storey. She calls Tommy for comment, and while he tells her to ‘f**k off,’ he makes the fatal error of revealing the tape was stolen, giving the storey a newsworthy aspect. The film subsequently slips into the hands of Penthouse publisher Bob Guccione, with Pamela and Tommy’s lawyers eager to propose they sue in an attempt to avoid photographs from the movie appearing in the adult magazine. However, Bob’s legal team refuses to back down, contending that it is ‘freedom of speech’ that will allow them to publish 20 of the ‘nastiest’ photographs, while the LA Times learns of the legal dispute and decides to report it as news. Pamela believes that “no one will ever see” the back page piece, but she is mistaken, as the article is picked up by Jay Leno’s (Adam Ray) crew as well as Hugh Hefner (Mike Seely). While Pamela and Tommy’s incessant squabbles continue, the couple sees their footage criticised on The Tonight Show, with Leno joking that Pamela’s ‘work attire’ involves being completely naked and that her ‘floatation devices’ have pleased marine safety experts. Pamela is summoned to give an oral deposition in the legal dispute with Penthouse’s staff at the end of the episode.
