New Netflix Drama “Unseen” (2023) Review

Unseen Review – Netflix’s newest series, “Unseen,” debuted on March 29, 2023, and shares the same name as a recent film but is vastly different. Directed by Özer Feyzioğlu and written by Özgür Önürme, “Unseen” is actually an adaptation of Turkish series called “Fatma,” set in South Africa.

The series follows the story of a cleaning lady who discovers her social status and lack of attention from others can allow her to get away with murder. By doing so, it offers an indicting commentary on Africa’s underground society.

Gail Mabalane, Vuyo Dabula, Brendon Daniels, Hein de Vries, and Ilse Klink star in “Unseen.” Although “Unseen” has yet to achieve the same success as other Netflix original series, it is expected to do so soon.

“Unseen” (2023) Review

If you’ve watched the Turkish series “Fatma,” then you’ll be familiar with the plotline of “Unseen.” This Netflix show follows a cleaning lady as she investigates through the back alleys of a city. Although it heavily relies on cliches, it’s set in modern-day South Africa, and the captivating performance from its lead character give the show an exciting and fresh vibe.

The series centers around Zenzi Mwala (Gale Mabalane), who embarks on a quest to locate her husband in the criminal underworld after his release from prison. The show’s world-building is steady and methodical as it delves into Zenzi’s harsh reality and her unconventional method of dealing with crime – by committing it herself.

“Unseen,” despite its overuse of genre tropes, remains captivating and thought-provoking throughout its six episodes. The show’s violence and bloody scenes are realistically depicted, making the story even more captivating to watch. Furthermore, cinematography and sound design are impressive features that draw the audience.

Though the show’s plot may sometimes feel overextended, its final two episodes are some of its strongest and most exciting. Zenzi’s “John Wick”-like the ability to escape difficult situations adds an extra layer of drama and intrigue to the series.

Overall, “Unseen” is an intriguing and compelling story worth watching. It may not be perfect, but it is a bold and captivating addition to Netflix’s catalog. All six episodes of its first season can now be streamed online for your enjoyment.
