Is UW Shell House in The Boys in the Boat Movie Real?

The movie “The Boys in the Boat” shows a UW Shell House that is not the real UW Shell House on the Seattle campus of the University of Washington. The movie uses a full-size copy of the ASUW Shell House that was built just for the movie.  The choice to rebuild the UW Shell House in a different place was made for several reasons, including changes in the Seattle landscape since the 1930s, the need to make the building more suitable for filming, and financial concerns.

The UW Shell House, which is an old building on the shores of Lake Washington, is still a real piece of history. The ASUW Shell House and the Conibear Shell House are the two rowing shell houses at the University of Washington (UW).  The replica of the shell house in the movie is a cinematic interpretation meant to catch the essence of the story while also meeting the needs of making a movie.

The ASUW Shell House, which is a major background in the movie, is an important part of this recreation. The movie has a full-size model of the ASUW Shell House that was made with great care for the event. To do this, a pre-production team went to the University of Washington campus and used high-tech scanning methods to get an accurate picture of the whole building, inside and out. The goal was to make sure that the copy not only looked a lot like the real thing but also made people feel like it was real.

A lot of the events in the Boys in the Boat story happened on the UW campus, but for different reasons, the movie was filmed in the UK. The movie’s producer and director, George Clooney, said that it was hard to find good settings because Seattle has changed a lot since the 1930s. As the city grew, it created problems, so the production team had to look for other locations with rivers, lakes, and enough room to rebuild the dock.

ASUW) Shell House

On the University of Washington campus in Seattle, Washington, there is a historic house called the Associated Students of the University of Washington (ASUW) Shell House. It is also known as the UW Canoe House. During World War I, the building was built in 1918 as a Navy airplane hangar. After that, from 1920 to 1949, it was a shell house for the University of Washington men’s rowing team. From 1950 to 1975, it was a place to rent canoes. The house is on Union Bay, northeast of the Montlake Cut.

ASUW) New Shell House 2020 -

The famous UW Men’s Rowing team, which won an Olympic gold medal in 1936, lived in the shell house until they moved to the Conibear Shellhouse building in 1949. The National Register of Historic Places has it on its list. In 2018, UW Recreation started a campaign to get the old shell house fixed up for $13 million so that its past could be learned and the waterfront would be better. The shell house in the movie “The Boys in the Boat” is not the real 104-year-old building at the Montlake Cut; it is a copy that was built just for the movie.
