Is HBO’s The Boondocks Reboot Cancelled?

Aaron McGruder’s The Boondocks is a canceled American adult animated sitcom mainly based on his comic strip of the same name. The show would have debuted on HBO Max. HBO Max’s planned reboot of the animated series has been officially been canceled. According to star Cedric Yarbrough, the Boondocks revival is no longer in the works at HBO Max.

Yarbrough revealed the relaunch would not materialize during a recent appearance on 1-on-1 w/Deuces, indicating that Sony Pictures Television had “pulled the plug” on the series and that it would no longer be going forward.

“I hate to say this, but… the show is, right now, not coming back,” Yarbrough said. “I don’t know if this is breaking news, but we’ve been wanting to do the show, and Sony… they decided they’re going to pull the plug. So, I don’t know. Hopefully, maybe one day we’ll be able to revisit. If we don’t then that’s what that is, but I wish the show was coming back.”

HBO Max and Sony Pictures Animation declined to comment when Variety reached out to them in their own article, so there is no official reason for the shelving.

HBO Max ordered the revival of The Boondocks in September 2019, with two seasons scheduled before the streaming channel ever began. The 24 new episodes of The Boondocks, as well as the whole 55-episode original series, were set to premiere on HBO Max in 2020.

The show opens with the Freemans, a black family, arriving into the fictional, friendly, and predominantly white suburb of Woodcrest, and follows them as they oppose Uncle Ruckus’ regime, which governs over the community government. Much of the satire, comedy, and conflict in the series comes from the perspective provided by this combination of cultures, lifestyles, social classes, stereotypes, opinions, and racialized identities.
