The Paramount+ crime drama HAPPY FACE has a lot of creepy characters that add to the world that is built around serial killer Keith Hunter Jesperson.One such character who stands out is Ennis Breeze, a creepy truck driver and true crime author who shows up in Episode 6 titled “Lorelai”. Played by Benjamin Mackey, Ennis quickly becomes a troubling presence, particularly for Hazel, played by Khiyla Aynne.
Ennis is introduced when Hazel is stranded at the Pioneer Falls motel. Instead of her grandfather Keith (played by Dennis Quaid) arriving, she’s picked up by this mysterious man who claims to be running errands for Keith. As they drive, Hazel finds out that Ennis isn’t just any truck driver; he’s a true crime author who is crazy about ‘Keith’s murders’. He has written tabloid stories about the Reed family, which shows that Keith’s influence still lives on outside of prison walls.
Naturally, viewers have started to ask: Is Ennis Breeze based on a real person?
The answer is no. Ennis Breeze is a fictional character. While HAPPY FACE is inspired by real events — drawn from Melissa Moore’s life (played by Annaleigh Ashford), the daughter of the real-life serial killer Keith Hunter Jesperson — the show blends fact with fiction to build its world. Ennis writes the story as a work of fiction, which adds to the drama and shows how Keith can still control events from jail.
Even though Ennis Breeze isn’t based on a real person, the character may be influenced by the many true crime writers and fans who have been interested in Keith’s murders over the years. In the show, Ennis becomes even more important when Ben (James Wolk), Hazel’s boyfriend, learns about her encounter and looks into it further. Ennis’s influence is a turning point in the story that shows how dangerous; things are getting for Hazel and how Keith is still manipulating her.
Even though the character is made up, he has a real effect on the story. He makes things more tense, puts Hazel in a more difficult emotional situation and reminds her that Keith’s crimes are still being felt. The fact that he is there also brings out the emotional toll that the attention on Melissa and her family’s past takes on them.
In HAPPY FACE, Ennis Breeze’s part is a powerful way to tell a story, even though he is not a real person. It shows how the line between fact and fiction is fuzzy throughout the series.
