Fatal Attraction Episode 7 Recap

‘Best Friends,’ the seventh episode of ‘Fatal Attraction,’ dives further into the characters’ histories and goals than any of the previous episodes. At the beginning of the episode, our hero, Dan Gallagher, gets freed on bail. He talks to his wife Beth Gallagher (Amanda Peet) about his approaching court case and how he doesn’t want to admit to having an affair with Alex Forrest in front of a jury. Dan’s defense strategy is to make Alex look like a crazy stalker in order to discredit her and make him look good. Alex’s youth and her relationship with her father, Stanley Forrest (Cliff Chamberlain), are explored through a sequence of flashbacks in this episode. Stanley is shown as a serial adulterer who lies and cheats on his wife and uses manipulation to get Alex to help him cover it up. Alex initially treats her father as a friend despite their rocky history together, but she soon confronts him about his deceit.

Simultaneously with the recollections, Dan’s trial begins, with the prosecution trying to paint him as a spoiled rich guy who took advantage of Alex. Alex is shown to have been kicked out of her law school study group due to her compulsive conduct in flashbacks. She tells her father about the leak before she leaves, and he continues to belittle her. The victim’s body was found near a lake, and the cause of death was blunt force trauma, as Detective Earl Booker (Reno Wilson) testifies at trial. Dan is the main suspect after his fingerprints are discovered in Alex’s apartment. Alex’s defense team has been trying to paint her as a troubled lady, while Conchita Lewis testifies in her favor.

Alex goes to therapy to work through her problems, but her interactions with her therapist become compulsive. At the same time in the current day, Dan’s pupil Ellen Gallagher (Alyssa Jirrels) goes undercover as one of her teachers, Richard Macksey (David Meunier). Dan gives Ellen the retrial application he filled out, confessing that the lies he told about his affair with Alex hurt his case. Alex’s neighbor Emma Rauch (Dee Wallace) and others testify against Dan throughout the trial, but his lawyer presents a compelling defense. But the horrifying truth comes out when Stanley backs the theory that Dan had an affair with Alex. After moving to Los Angeles, Alex texted her dad a selfie with Dan and his dog Quincy, despite Dan saying they had no contact.

In the final segment of the program, Dan’s case is resolved. Dan’s case is crippled by Stanley’s evidence, and the jury finds him guilty by an overwhelming majority. Dan receives a prison sentence and decides to appeal his conviction. He hopes a retrial will be granted since he discovered additional fingerprints in Alex’s apartment and included new suspects in his appeal. Dan’s strategy, however, backfires spectacularly. The judge becomes suspicious of Dan’s honesty after learning of his history of lying and rules against his motion for a new trial. Dan decides not to seek an appeal after realizing it would be pointless. He opens himself to Beth, and she reassures him that she has never doubted his inability to kill. The episode concludes with a flashback showing Beth and Alex’s first meeting after she learns of her husband’s affair. Overall, Dan is forced to face his fate in prison and learn more about Alex’s past as he watches his trial unfold and then be denied a retrial.
