The series is a modern spin on Lois Duncan’s 1973 novel I Know What You Did Last Summer and the 1997 film adaptation, and it is part of the same-named franchise. if anyone wonders why Duncan’s work required another semi-adaptation in 2021, let alone one spanning eight episodes on Amazon, the answer is simple: Teenagers in 1973 and 1997 may have been dumb, but they didn’t have Instagram, making those retro-adolescents virtually paragons of altruism. On a purely practical level, Amazon’s I Know What You Did Last Summer is just slightly about Instagram, but it pushes the story to an extreme.

I Know What You Did Last Summer Review:

I Know What You Did Last Summer is compulsively bewildering. And even if it’s a reboot/remake/adaptation nobody exactly asked for, I can understand the morally playful purpose behind at least some of its watchable yet exasperating choices. – THR

I Know What You Did Last Summer does take the franchise in a new direction narratively, which is good. But it would have been better if it had gone in that new direction while keeping the thing that was appealing about the original version. What we get instead doesn’t work as either a contemporary show or a nostalgia exercise. It’s just not fun enough. – TV Guide

I Know What You Did Last Summer’s unlikable characters, inconsistent tone, and occasional cookie-cutter scares are at odds with Madison Iseman’s excellent, dual-character performance and the series’ fresh, clever twists on the source material. While it is so far better than the films that came before it, it’s far from the must-binge horror reimagining we were hoping for. All that said, it’s hooked us enough to ensure we’ll stick with it until every one of its annoying teens meets their bitter end. – IGN
