On June 3, Amazon Prime Video’s The Boys will return for a third season. The smart and hyperviolent superhero satire’s second season ended with a mind-blowing surprise —and, based on the season 3 previews, it won’t be the show’s final season. Jensen Ackles will play Soldier Boy, a Captain America-like hero who predates Homelander, in the third season, which will introduce even more new characters and themes (Antony Starr). To keep you up to date on all of these developments, Polygon has put together a quick recap of Season 2’s finale.
Did The Boys Really Break Up In The Second Season?
Season 2 began with the anti super team already split, but the closing episode, “What I Know,” led them all down separate roads. Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) made his way back to Hughie (Jack Quaid), M.M. (Laz Alonso), Frenchie (Tomer Capon), and Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) in order to get back to Becca (Shantel VanSanten), who he discovered was still alive at the end of season 1. Hughie remained adamant that supes can be taken down the “proper” way, but Butcher was still willing to do everything in his drive for vengeance, even kidnapping Becca and Homelander’s son, Ryan (Cameron Crovetti), to get back at Homelander.
Hughie departed the squad in episode 8 to work with Victoria Neuman (Claudia Doumit), the Federal Bureau of Superhuman Affairs’ new chief. He has no idea that the congresswoman is the mysterious brain-popping assassin who killed CIA’s Susan Raynor (Jennifer Esposito), former Vought science officer Jonah Vogelbaum (John Doman), Alastair Adana (Goran Visnjic), and a slew of others at the hearing that was supposed to bring down Vought. Butcher demonstrated genuine maturity and compassion by placing Ryan under Grace Mallory’s (Laila Robins) protection, despite the fact that the unfortunate boy accidentally killed Becca while attempting to protect her from Stormfront (Aya Cash).
After The Boys Season 2 Finale, Who Is Left In The Seven?
Colby Minifie, a Vought executive, tries to manipulate members of The Seven. Despite the fact that the Seven had already lost two supes in season 1Lamplighter’s resignation and Translucent’s (Alex Hassell) horrific death membership in season 2 was extremely fluid. Early on, A-Train (Jessie Usher) was hospitalized, then got back on his feet and rejoined the group, only to be booted out by Homelander for not meeting his high standards. A-Train was officially back in the Seven before the end of the season, thanks to some “divine” intervention from the now-defunct Alastair. Queen Maeve (Dominique McElligott) was desperate to stop Homelander, so she teamed up with The Deep, who discovered video footage of Homelander and Maeve abandoning a planeload of passengers. She used the film and Homelander’s anxieties to get Elena (Nicola Correia-Damude), who was still broken up with her, and the Boys a reprieve. Maeve was allegedly still in the Seven at the end of the season.
Starlight spent the majority of her time with The Boys in order to expose Vought’s heinous tactics. She resumed her romance with Hughie, but not before pondering whether Butcher is correct that supes don’t get high, which could be a harbinger of things to come. Starlight was on Maeve’s side during the final press conference after being framed as Public Enemy No. 1 by Stormfront and Homelander and afterward cleared her name. She’s still a member of the Seven, but just in name at this time. Lamplighter moved from being an inactive member of the Seven to be an inactive member of, uh, life when he self-immolated in a protest at Vought headquarters, assisting in the release of Starlight. We did hear the circumstances of Mallory’s grandchildren’s deaths, as well as what he’d been up to since: notably, disposing of the patients at Sage Grove who either did not respond to Compound V or refused to submit to Vought’s control. Butcher and Starlight were pursued by Black Noir (Nathan Mitchell) throughout the season, but it was Maeve who put him out of commission with an Almond Joy. Vought’s true objective, as revealed by Stormfront, was to create an army of super-strong white nationalists commanded by herself and Homelander. . Homelander’s son Ryan, on the other hand, was the one who disabled Stormfront, killing his mother in the process. So, while the Seven haven’t been completely destroyed, Homelander is running out on allies.
After The Events of The Boys Season 2, Where Does Vought International Stand?
Vought’s supes joined the US military forces in season 2, with government authorities agreeing to the Seven’s criteria on everything from who would be in command to acceptable collateral damage, i.e. loss of human life, in the inaugural episode. But the multibillion-dollar behemoth was dogged by controversy after scandal: first, the Compound V exposé, then the release of images revealing Stormfront to be an old-school Nazi, not merely a neo-Nazi. Vought, on the other hand, was able to acquire control of the media narrative under the leadership of Stan Edgar (Giancarlo Esposito). The Compound V leak only increased demand for the drug, which revealed out to be Vought’s true goal all along – as Edgar informed Homelander, Vought is a pharmaceutical firm, not a superhero firm. After Stormfront’s background was revealed, Edgar’s strategy hit a bump, but in the final moments of the show, he was back on the stage, shifting the blame away from his organisation and placing it squarely on one bad apple.
