1883 Episode 4 Recap

Elsa is marveling at a gypsy traveler.  As they go across the unknown, Elsa ponders nature’s indifference and the loss of civilized people’s routines. Everything is a little heavy, but that’s great since Elsa picks up a frog and declares herself a cowboy. She immediately trades the gold jewelry James gave her for some jeans at camp, realizing that horseback riding will be simpler without a dress. Ennis seems to like the look, and he and Elsa share their first kiss, prompting a gushing diary post about spit exchanging. Elsa approaches a very distraught Ennis in the morning, despite the fact that she should have been up early watching the hearing, possibly predicting future trouble. James also watches them kiss but informs Elsa that she is no longer a child and that he can no longer treat her like one. James’ disobedience continues, as he disagrees with Shea on a trip strategy. He has begun to show greater respect for the rank, referring to Shea as “captain.”

The debates center on when and how the wagon train should cross the river. To avoid upsetting the riverbed and dooming the wagon wheels, they decide to cross in the afternoon before the storm, sending people first, wagons second, and animals third. Fearing a traffic gridlock, James decides to transfer his family a night early, making sure to secure his breathing mask before assisting others. Or maybe he’s just obstinate. Alternatively, you may be a jerk. Shea is concerned that James’ arrogance may spread, as some of the cowboys begin to question Shea’s food strategy, fearing that the cattle would not be enough to feed the wagon train.  Shea and Thomas discuss the dread and fortitude of migrants, with Shea saying that the most terrifying thing is the unknown. “That’s only because you haven’t been whipped, Captain,” Thomas responds.

According to the conversation, there are more motivators for migrants’ journeys than future opportunities. It also offers some information about Thomas’ past. When Noemi, the gypsy woman who Shea and Thomas earlier assisted, suggests a romantic relationship, Thomas discusses the dangers of bi-racial relationships, dismissing Noemi’s naiveté that American freedom applies to everything. Shea leads the waggon train to the river after having a nightmare about his experience in the Civil War. First, he tells the refugees that they must lighten their loads by discarding furniture and musical equipment. Elsa’s earlier comment about the shedding of customs is confirmed by the graveyard of supplies left behind: as the wagon train travels west, the people leave more of their city-dwelling selves behind. Or, as Shea puts it, you’ve become pilgrims! As the wagon train passes, Elsa stays behind with the animals. As we watch the refugees risk the river, she plays an abandoned piano. Several people perish. Elsa crosses the street at the end of the episode and sees her mother, Margaret, crying.
