ABC’s Will Trent is heading into its two-part finale with Episode 17, titled “WHY, HELLO, SHERIFF”, which aired May 6. This episode, directed by Erika Christensen—who also stars as Angie Polaski—marks a pivotal turning point as the show builds toward its final season conclusion.
In an exclusive interview with TV Insider, Will Trent star Erika Christensen opened up about the upcoming episodes of Season 3, including the highly anticipated penultimate episode she directed, Episode 17, “Why, Hello, Sheriff.” Christensen shared her excitement over the intense and dramatic moments packed into the last few episodes of the season.
Christensen praised the amount of story and character development that is crammed into the final episodes, calling Episode 17 especially crucial in setting up the finale and laying the groundwork for Will Trent Season 4. She explained that these episodes are filled with surprises that will change how viewers perceive the characters and the world they’ve been watching.
In this penultimate episode, Will Trent (played by Ramón Rodríguez) travels to a rural town with Faith Mitchell (played by Iantha Richardson) to investigate a disturbing murder. But what seems like a typical case quickly becomes complicated. Will ends up butting heads with the town’s local sheriff. As the GBI agent from the big city and the police officer from the small town clash, tensions rise and shocking truths are revealed, especially those that have to do with Will’s own past.
As the investigation deepens, Will is forced to confront parts of his past that he didn’t anticipate facing, making this more than just a routine case. His complex family history, which has been slowly unfolding across past seasons, once again takes center stage.
Meanwhile, back in Atlanta, Angie makes a discovery that could shift everything. Still reeling from the death of her abusive mother, Angie finds herself spiraling emotionally, and this new revelation doesn’t make things easier. In her role as director, Christensen not only gives a powerful performance, but she also brings her own vision to the screen.
On another front, Detective Michael Ormewood (played by Jake McLaughlin) continues to deal with the emotional and personal toll of his cancer diagnosis. The episode sees him grappling with whether to open up to his friends and colleagues about his condition or to keep it hidden, as he tries to navigate this difficult time alone.

This episode directly connects to what’s coming in the finale, titled “Listening to a Heartbeat.” That episode will feature a large-scale biological attack unleashed by a domestic terrorist group. As the GBI team scrambles to contain the outbreak, Will will once again face unresolved issues within his family, including his ties to James Ulster (played by Greg Germann), the serial killer who claimed to be his biological father.
When asked about her reaction to the Will Trent renewal for a fourth season, Christensen expressed excitement but also a sense of uncertainty. While she’s not a writer, she has an idea of where Angie’s storyline might go, but she’s also aware that things could change. Still, the possibility of exploring new storylines and deepening the characters in Season 4 is something Christensen is eager for.
Christensen also talked about the unique atmosphere on set—saying that the cast and crew were like a close-knit family. She told a touching story about how the crew went on vacation together after the show was over—showing how real bonds were made during the production. Because the set is creative and friendly, Christensen is looking forward to Season 4, when the show’s team will keep pushing the limits of what is possible in storytelling.
“Why, Hello, Sheriff” raises the stakes and sets up a very important ending. In Episode 17, there are emotional confrontations, new personal revelations, and a deeper look into the characters’ pasts. This sets the stage for the dramatic and intense final showdown.
