Shele Danishefsky Covlin was a well-known investment banker in addition to being a mother of two children. Before she passed away, she enjoyed a prosperous life in New York City, where she worked as a senior vice president for the private wealth management division of an investment bank.

At the age of 36, Shele went to a party in New York that was intended for Jewish singles to meet potential partners. It was there that she first made the acquaintance of Rod Covlin, who was 25 at the time. The two clicked right away and were engaged to be married only half a year after their first encounter with one another. Anna and Myles were the couple’s two children from their union. Rod’s own career as a stockbroker was never able to achieve the same degree of success as his father’s.

A short time later, Ms. Shele Covlin submitted the necessary paperwork to begin the divorce process. After the couple divorced, Ms. Danishefsky Covlin rented the apartment just across the hall from her former spouse, and shortly thereafter, an unpleasant custody dispute erupted between the two parties. Mr. Covlin made an attempt to ruin the life of his estranged wife by spreading rumours to her employer that she was a drug addict and that she had stolen money from their joint account. He encouraged their kid, who was three at the time, to make up allegations that his mother had sexually abused him. In addition to that, he confessed to a woman he had met online that he intended to murder his wife.

It appears that the final straw was when Ms. Shele Covlin decided to remove her estranged spouse from her will. This was one of the arrangements she had made. Because he was included in her will, he had the potential to inherit $5 million in the case of her passing away. However, Mr. Covlin did not get the money after it was discovered that Ms. Danishefsky Covlin had been found dead in her residence. Instead, his parents took legal custody of the children and became their guardians.

The initial presumption made by the authorities was that the 47-year-old woman had fallen in the bathtub and struck her head, but the woman’s family did not believe this to be the case. Religious beliefs led the family to initially refuse an autopsy, but as suspicions increased, they ultimately chose to exhume her body and carry out the procedure nonetheless. After discovering that Danishefsky had been suffocated, the medical examiner concluded that her death was the result of a criminal act. The scratch marks and bruising that was found on her hand led the police to begin to investigate the circumstances surrounding her passing.  According to Oxygen, when the NYPD arrived, Covlin was not wet, contradicting his allegation that he had hauled her out of the bathtub moments before their arrival.

After a period of six years, he was apprehended and charged with her homicide. During the trial, the prosecution said that he had slain his soon-to-be- ex-wife for the purpose of obtaining a financial reward.
