The Woman King, now available on Netflix which Gina Prince-Bythewood directed, is based on true events that took place in the mighty African nation of Dahomey in the 18th and 19th centuries.  The Agojie are the focus of The Woman King; they were a troop of female warriors that defended Dahomey for about 300 years, from the 18th to the early 20th centuries. Completely unlike any other recent blockbuster, The Woman King is full of exciting action scenes, a dramatic script, and a predominantly Black female ensemble.

The Woman King is a refreshing change of pace from the usual Hollywood blockbuster, illuminating a period in Africa’s history that has been mostly ignored by Hollywood filmmakers while also expressing an ambitious spirit of female empowerment through its narrative. Who plays the role of Nawi in “The Woman King”?

Thuso Mbedu plays the character Nawi in the film “The Woman King.” Nawi is a young Agojie warrior from the West African kingdom of Dahomey. The film centers around the Agojie, a tribe of female warriors, and their rulers played by Viola Davis and John Boyega (John Boyega).  Malik (Jordan Bolger), a Dutch slave trader, is portrayed by Jordan Bolger. Malik travels to Dahomey to find out more about his late mother, who was abducted and sold into slavery there. Malik falls in love with Nawi, a courageous Agojie warrior, while he is in Dahomey. In the film’s concluding scene, Malik frees a group of slaves who ultimately kill Santo (Hero Fiennes Tiffin) after Nawi convinces him to keep his distance from his friend. The South African actor Thuso Mbedu does a great job of bringing Nawi to life.

A South African actress Thuso Nokwanda Mbedu rose to prominence for her roles in a number of television shows before making a name for herself in foreign productions. Mbedu was born on July 8, 1991, in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal. His parents are Xhosa and Sotho, while his mother is Zulu. 

Mbedu has received honors and accolades during the course of her career. She first appeared in South African soap operas including “Isibaya” and “Scandal!” before assuming the part of Winnie in the drama series “Is’Thunzi.”  Mbedu was nominated for the Best Actress in a TV Drama award for her performance in “Is’Thunzi.” Mbedu was included in the Forbes Africa 30 under 30 list in 2018 due to her talent and rising fame.

Thuso Nokwanda Mbedu also made an appearance on the teen drama “Shuga,” and she later made her Hollywood debut in the miniseries “The Underground Railroad” on Amazon Prime as Cora Randall. As she dealt with her own losses, Mbedu felt a strong connection to her character in “The Underground Railroad.” She broke down the walls between her own experiences and those of her characters, which helped her to mature and recover from emotional scars.  Mbedu’s feature film début was in the American historical epic “The Woman King” in 2022, following the success of “The Underground Railroad,” which she had previously starred in.

Thuso Mbedu has drawn attention from audiences domestically and abroad throughout her career by showcasing her acting talent and versatility. She has won countless awards and cemented her status as a rising star in the entertainment business thanks to her outstanding performances.
