The American psychological horror movie THE WOMAN IN THE YARD comes out in 2025. It’s about grief, trauma, and the dark side of the mind. The movie, which was directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and written by Sam Stefanak, a first-time screenwriter, tells a scary and emotional story through the lens of horror. Collet-Serra is known for making thrillers with a lot of tension, and this movie has a moody, atmospheric feel to it.
Danielle Deadwyler plays Ramona, the mother who is being tormented, and Okwui Okpokwasili plays the mysterious woman in black. Peyton Jackson and Russell Hornsby also give strong performances that add emotional depth and tension to the life of the family that is falling apart.
MOVIE STORYLINE
The story is about Ramona, played by Danielelle Deadwyler, a mother who lost her husband David in a car accident and is now physically and emotionally disabled. As Ramona raises her kids, Taylor and Annie, she grows farther away from them. When a strange woman in black walks into their yard and keeps saying, “Today’s the day,” it shakes up their peaceful, solitary life.
As things get more tense, Taylor starts to doubt his mother’s judgment, especially after their dog Charlie goes missing for no clear reason. As she gets closer to the house, she uses dark forces to scare the family and bring up secrets that have been buried for a long time. After some time, it turns out that Ramona caused the car accident and had been lying to her kids about it.
In the end, it turns out that The Woman in the Yard is a reflection of Ramona’s own mind. She was created out of depression and a prayer not for strength to live, but for strength to die. The children come back just in time to stop Ramona from killing herself in the last act, and the Woman goes away.
WHERE WAS THE WOMAN IN THE YARD FILMED?
A lot of the filming for The Woman in the Yard was done between late April 2024 and May of that same year. The movie was mostly shot in ‘Georgia’, which was chosen for its wide range of natural and built environments that helped set the emotional tone of the story. The main places where the production took place were the city of Athens and the small town of Bostwick.
BOSTWICK, GEORGIA
Bostwick, located in Morgan County, Georgia, served as a vital filming location for The Woman in the Yard. This small city provided the tranquil, isolated backdrop required for the exterior scenes involving Ramona’s farmhouse. The house’s stillness and sense of space added tension to the story and went well with Ramona’s feeling of being alone.
A slightly worn-out but charming farmhouse surrounded by open fields was chosen by the production team as the perfect location for the story. The story is about psychological fear and spiritual imprisonment, and the isolated feel of Bostwick added to those ideas.
One of the producers, Stephanie Allain, said great things about filming in Georgia. “I think people are so thankful to be working,” she said. There was a certain level of professionalism. She said nice things about the local crews and how quiet Bostwick was, which let the cast and crew really focus on their work.
ATHENS, GEORGIA
A large portion of the film’s interior scenes and special effects work were completed in Athens, Georgia, particularly at the newly established Athena Studios. It was this building at 900 Athena Drive that became the center of production. The studio was very important to making the psychological horror come to life. It had four soundproof stages and 84,000 square feet of filming space.
Athena Studios also let them control the lighting and effects, which was very important for scenes with moving shadows and weird psychological scenes. This ensured the filmmakers could create a haunting, dream-like atmosphere within the walls of the house.
In an interview with The Credits, producer Stephanie Allain mentioned that this was her first project shot outside Atlanta. “This time, we were out in Athens, which is an hour and a half away – a college town, a music town, old buildings, and a cute river runs through it,” she said. Her description highlighted the city’s charm and character, which offered a fresh creative environment for the film.
ATHENA STUDIOS – A NEW FILMMAKING HUB
Athena Studios, where much of The Woman in the Yard was shot, represents a growing film infrastructure in Georgia. As the first major film project to be shot at this studio, the movie holds a significant place in the state’s filmmaking timeline.
The controlled setting allowed the production to blend practical sets with special effects. For a film rooted in psychological horror, lighting, shadows, and camera angles are vital. Athena Studios provided the technical resources to execute these elements seamlessly. The indoor scenes, such as Ramona’s haunting visions and the final emotional confrontation, were primarily filmed here.
The Woman in the Yard is a film deeply rooted in psychological tension and emotional vulnerability. Its filming locations in Bostwick and Athens, Georgia, were instrumental in shaping the tone and mood of the story. The natural isolation of Bostwick gave the outdoor scenes an eerie quietness, while the modern facilities at Athena Studios in Athens allowed the filmmakers to control every detail of the psychological horror elements.
For fans curious about where the film was shot or anyone interested in visiting the locations featured in this haunting tale, Georgia offers both scenic beauty and cinematic history.
