WHERE WAS NETFLIX’S BATTLE CAMP FILMED?

Netflix’s BATTLE CAMP is an intense reality competition where 18 popular faces from Netflix’s reality universe take on grueling physical challenges for a grand cash prize of $250,000. The contestants work in teams called Eagles, Bears, and Wolves. They have to do difficult tasks, deal with punishments, and avoid the dreaded spinning wheel of bad luck. A lot of people know these actors from hit shows like Cheer, Selling the OC, The Circle, The Ultimatum: Queer Love and Too Hot to Handle.

All 10 episodes of BATTLE CAMP debuted around the world on Netflix on April 23, 2025. The show’s dramatic format, strange characters, and especially its beautiful setting immediately caught people’s attention. Watching the show is exciting, but what really makes it stand out is the beautiful, rural setting. While the show delivers thrilling content, one element that stands out is its breathtaking, rustic setting. But where exactly did the filming happen? Let’s look at the beautiful places where BATTLE CAMP was filmed and hear what the actors and creators had to say about it.

BATTLE CAMP FILMING LOCATIONS

BATTLE CAMP was filmed in a remote area just outside of Mexico City. The area was surrounded by mountains and thick forests. Not only did the natural setting make the show look better, it was also the perfect setting for the physically challenging challenges. It began in March 2024 and was over in April 2024, a month later than planned.

OUTSKIRTS OF MEXICO CITY: A RAW AND RUGGED SETTING

The mountains outside of Mexico City were where most of the filming for BATTLE CAMP took place. The location was far away and rough but it had the perfect mix of privacy, natural beauty, and room for building a complicated set. The production team built a fully functional camp with many wooden cabins, shared buildings, and winding trails so that contestants could eat, sleep and plan their next moves between shows.

What sets this location apart is its immersive — almost nostalgic feel — a callback to traditional summer camps, but with a high-stakes twist. The dense forest and mountainous terrain provided a variety of challenges — including land-based obstacle courses, endurance tests, and even aquatic events using temporary setups built for the show.

CUSTOM-BUILT SETS FOR CHALLENGES

To make things more competitive, the crew built sets that were just right for each challenge. A lot of these were changed to work with the land, like using slopes for hill climbs, open forest clearings for tasks for big groups, and lakes for obstacles that you have to navigate through water. These unique set-ups pushed contestants to their limits and made each task more unpredictable.

BEHIND THE SCENES: TAYLOR LEWAN’S INSIGHT ON FILMING

Taylor Lewan

Former NFL player and Bussin’ with the Boys podcast host Taylor Lewan was a major part of the show both on-screen and off. In interviews with tudum, Lewan described his first hosting experience as a unique adventure, likening it to being a quarterback. He explained:

“It was 30+ days of late nights and early mornings, trying to figure out how to swim in this brand-new ocean… The cast was amazing to be around, but the production team was something I’d never seen before — a staff of over 400 people, all working together.”

Lewan also revealed that he went through training with a “host coach” to prepare for the role.He even looked up Mark L. Walberg, the host of Temptation Island, to learn how to deal with the emotional challenges of a competitive reality show. Lewan stressed that he tried to get to know the contestants better during off-time, which helped him handle the intense dynamics of the show better.

“I wanted to know the ins and outs of the relationships and how the teams were working together,” Lewan shared.

THE PRODUCTION SCALE

Filming such a physically intense and visually driven show in a remote area came with its own set of challenges. With over 400 crew members on site, the scale of the production was massive. Every challenge had to be safely built, tested, and coordinated — all within a forest environment that wasn’t originally designed for filming.

During the month-long shoot, temporary infrastructure like water access, safety gear, and even power sources had to be set up to help the contestants and the production crew. The end result was a reality show with a lot of action and a lot of immersion that felt like a mix between Survivor and a summer boot camp.

WHY MEXICO WAS THE RIGHT CHOICE

Battle Camp _ location in Mexico

The choice to film in Mexico made strategic sense for several reasons. First, the diverse terrain allowed the show’s creators to design a wide range of challenges. Second, filming outside the U.S. provided the kind of privacy and control needed to keep the show’s outcomes under wraps before release.

Moreover, Mexico’s established reputation for hosting international productions made it easier to hire experienced local crew members and navigate logistics like permits and location setup.

Even though BATTLE CAMP is all about competition and having a star-studded cast, the place where the show is filmed is just as important to how viewers feel about it. The remote mountains outside of Mexico City not only gave players and viewers a chance to be in a wild, uncontrolled environment, but they also gave them the space and variety of challenges they needed.

As Taylor Lewan and the cast battled their way through high-stakes games, tough conditions, and social twists, the location stood firm as the silent character of the show — rugged, unpredictable, and unforgettable.

For fans curious about the behind-the-scenes journey, it’s clear: BATTLE CAMP wouldn’t be the same without its wild Mexican setting.
