What Language Does Teonna Speak in 1923?  Which Tribe does She belong to?

The next two generations of the Dutton family are the focus of the Western series 1923′ produced by Paramount+ as they deal with the effects of Montana’s historic drought, lawlessness and prohibition, and an epidemic of cattle theft. The main reason why Harrison Ford’s character, Jacob Dutton, didn’t perish is that, as he put it, he’s too stubborn to die. While in Africa, the Duttons’ third child received a letter from their parents asking for his help in their war against the sheepherders. Helen Mirren plays Cara Dutton, who is doing everything she can to delay the resolution of the conflict until Spencer gets back. Meanwhile, the Indigenous students at the Catholic boarding school are featured in each episode of 1923 this season. Taylor Sheridan has woven the tragic histories of Montana’s indigenous peoples into each installment of the Yellowstone series.

Teonna Rainwater, a young Native American girl who is an Indigenous student, is the focus of one of the most important storylines. Teonna is held captive in a Catholic boarding school where she is subjected to physical and sexual abuse. At the end of the first episode, we learn that while Teonna is being brutally beaten by a nun, the nun herself is being abused by her superior, Father Renaud. As a result, the nun suffers from trauma brought on by the patriarchal church, and Teonna is victimized by the nun because she blames them for her own mistreatment. Although Father Renaud initially seems to be on Teonna’s side, he ends up whipping her so severely that she suffers permanent scarring to the backs of her legs. Teonna and a number of her fellow Native American women are coerced by Sister Mary into converting to Catholicism, which requires them to renounce their culture as well as their native language. Teonna not only puts her own life in danger to avoid having such a conversation, but she also takes the life of Sister Mary as a form of vengeance. As Teonna makes her daring getaway from the Native American boarding school in order to get back to her people, the audience members must be wondering which Native American tribe she is a member of.  Which Tribe does Teonna belong to?

Apsáalooke is the name given to members of the Crow Tribe of Montana by the French; it translates to “children of the large-beaked bird,” which is Teonna Rainwater’s tribe’s other name. In their own languages, other tribes also call the Apsáalooke “crow” or “raven” to describe them. The original meaning of this name has been lost over time, but many Apsáalooké people think it refers to the mythical Thunderbird. In the previous era, the Crow lived in the Yellowstone River valley. This valley is in Wyoming, Montana, and North Dakota, where the Yellowstone River meets the Missouri River. Since the early 1800s, most Crow people have lived on their reservation south of Billings, Montana. They now live in several big cities, mostly in the west. Crow Agency, in Montana, is where the tribe’s headquarters are.  The Little Big Horn College is run by the tribe.  The Crow people have an Indian reservation in the state’s southwestern corner now, and their tribe has federal recognition as the Crow Tribe of Montana. The Crow language is spoken by the Crow Indians of the Plains. It is related to other Siouan languages spoken in the Missouri River Valley.

Taylor Sheridan’s ‘Yellowstone’ world has always included the history and hardships of the Crow people. Sheridan worked with AJ Not Afraid, head of the Crow Nation, in developing the original series Yellowstone, and their partnership continues in ‘1923,’ which focuses on Teonna and her family and their struggles as a Native American tribe. Aminah Nieves, who herself is Native American, was able to empathize with the challenges that her character Teonna faced in the role of a Crow. Simply said, Teonna in general is an extension of myself and my family. So being able to dip into that, and to honor my ancestors, who have been through so much adversity and still continue to go through adversity, is very important to me. Nieves told Collider.

What language does Teonna speak?

Teonna Rainwater is fluent in Crow, a Siouan-speaking tribe of the Missouri Valley.  Teonna’s relatives Baapuxti, played by Leenah Robinson, and Aminah Nieves, are both fluent in Crow. Teonna uses her knowledge of the Crow language to fight off Catholicism. Teonna shows she is not willing to be fully uprooted from the Crow community by demonstrating fluency in their language. A century ago, pupils at Catholic boarding schools in Montana may have faced such limitations or prohibitions on speaking the Native American language. In 2007, about 3,000 of the 14,000 tribe members who were registered spoke the Crow language.
