THEM on Prime Video is back with a scary new season called THEM: The Scare. The show is set in the 1990s and follows Deborah Ayorinde‘s character, LAPD officer Dawn Reeve, as she looks into a string of horrible murders. Dawn is now a detective and has a teenage son named Kel (Joshua J. Williams) and a loving mother named Athena. She has to figure out how foster mother Bernice Mott (Cindi Davis) died after being found bent over and pushed under a sink cabinet. There is broken glass, a broken clock, and cleaning materials all over the hallway at the crime scene, which looks very scary.
Even though Dawn was given the case, Detective Ronald McKinney (Jeremy Bobb) takes charge because of a mistake she made in the Southside Slayer case. Dawn gets angry at McKinney for closing cases quickly and not doing a good job. McKinney wrongly blames Malcolm (Deion Smith), the boy who reported the murder, for it, saying that Malcolm must have killed her because Mott was so mean to him. When Dawn sees Malcolm in tears, she tells him to hire a lawyer.
At the same time, Edmund Gaines (Luke James), an actor who is having a hard time and works at an arcade, has trouble at his audition for a gangster part because he is quiet. Edmund also has love for Rhonda (Tamika Shannon), the agency’s secretary, with whom he gets along well. Edmund’s dreams are dashed, though, when he sees Rhonda say goodbye to the cameraman with love.
As Dawn enjoys her birthday with her family, her personal life and work life are mixed together. Athena’s declining motor skills and Dawn’s ex-boyfriend’s constant attempts to get in touch with her make things more tense. Strange things are still happening because the lights are flickering in the kitchen and garage while the birthday dinner is going on.
When Rhonda takes her son Kenny (Ace Tucker) to the playground, Edmund and she have a moment of getting close. Rhonda is moved by Edmund’s kindness and offers to help him find a part by reading scripts for him. For Malcolm’s sister Kia (Hattie Hoskins), a flashback shows Bernice’s fear of men, which is what made her group the foster kids to watch TV so she wouldn’t fall asleep. Since Kia was awake during the attack, she saw the man break Bernice Mott’s bones.
Still more flashing lights bother Athena (Pam Grier) at the Reeves’ house. She is cutting carrots when she hears Bernice scream. Kel is busy with his drums upstairs at the same time. When Dawn gets home, she finds them both asleep and starts studying the case. As she tries to imagine herself in the victim’s place under the sink cabinet while listening to the crime scene recording, the sound starts to shake, and at the end, there is a scary question: “Are you scared?”
