The Bear Season 2 Episode 4 Recap: Honeydew

The episode starts with the Bear crew dealing with the chaotic preparations for the restaurant opening.  Permits, inspections, and money problems (including an IRS fine) arise after Mikey misspells the restaurant’s name. Natalie, who had been trying to hide her pregnancy from Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), comes clean about it at this chaotic time.

The majority of the episode follows Marcus (Lionel Boyce) in Copenhagen.  He lives on a small boat and assists Luca in making elaborate pastries. Marcus wants to improve his cooking talents by learning as much as possible about the cuisine of Denmark. Luca describes his own career path in the hospitality industry, stressing the need for chefs to gain experience in settings other than the kitchen.

Marcus spends much of the episode thinking about how he got started in the food industry. He had previously worked at McDonald’s and played football at the collegiate level before being recruited by Michael “Mikey” Berzatto (Jon Bernthal) to make bread at the Beef. Although Marcus feels bad about not being in Chicago to help his mom or handle the restaurant’s problems, Sydney reassures him that he must put his own needs first.

The episode concludes with a video conference between Marcus and Sydney, during which they share their sentiments for and encouragement of one another. Marcus is an essential part of the program because of his steady presence and cool temperament.

There are other references to Chicago, such as Sydney holding interviews for staff and recruiting SNL alum Alex Moffat, and Marcus perhaps working at the Rock ‘n’ Roll McDonald’s.
