SUMMER HOUSE (BREAKING BREAD) RECAP: SEASON 9 EPISODE 9 — EXPLAINED

There’s tension in the air as Summer House Season 9, Episode 9 kicks off. Titled “Breaking Bread,” the episode promises drama — and it delivers, centering around a Shabbat dinner that should’ve been peaceful but turns chaotic thanks to old wounds, new relationships, and some messy miscommunication.

It all starts with a surprising car ride. Lindsay Hubbard and Paige DeSorbo—who haven’t always been on the friendliest terms—ride together to the Hamptons. It’s a moment that signals how far the two women have come. Flashbacks remind viewers of their rocky beginnings, but now, there’s mutual respect. Paige even admits she learned not to apologize unnecessarily from Lindsay, joking, “I was raised by Lindsay Hubbard.” It’s the calm before the storm.

Meanwhile, back at the house, Jesse Solomon is preparing something meaningful. He’s hosting a Shabbat dinner for the group — a tradition that brings his Jewish upbringing into the fold. Jesse sees the housemates as family and wants to share a part of his culture. He even asks everyone to put their phones in a basket to be fully present. It’s a sweet, spiritual moment. Jesse sings the prayer, and everyone gathers at the table to share what they want to leave behind from the past week and carry into the new one.

Then it’s Carl Radke’s turn to speak. He reveals that he went on a date with a woman named Lil, but he’s not interested in continuing it. Lil, who once handed him a lemon on their first date to symbolize turning lemons into lemonade, came off as too quirky for his taste. Carl calls her “zany” and makes it clear he wants to keep dating — just not her.

Summer House Season 9 Episode 13 Recap – “Changing Tides”

Summer House (S9 E9)This moment opens the door for drama. Lindsay, Carl’s ex-fiancée, jumps in to stir the pot. She brings up Carl’s “little girlfriend” and questions if he was talking to Lil during the tail end of their relationship. Lindsay believes Carl changed in the final two weeks before their breakup and that Lil’s presence gave him the confidence to end things. She accuses Carl of being too weak to leave her unless he had someone else lined up.

Carl denies starting anything with Lil while he and Lindsay were still together. He says their DMs began in the fall—after their breakup. Lindsay presses further, reminding Carl that he met Lil’s parents during the summer. Carl dismisses it, saying he doesn’t feel the need to tell people every time he meets someone’s parents.

The back-and-forth intensifies. Lindsay claims Carl has poor judgment when it comes to women. Carl fires back by saying that dating Lindsay proves her point. The tension is thick. Then Lindsay demands Carl show her the messages. His phone, not in the basket, is upstairs charging. Carl fetches it and tries to hand it to someone at the table to confirm the timeline. Everyone hesitates. Finally, Lindsay takes the phone herself and confirms that Lil’s message was sent in October, long after their relationship ended.

Carl shrugs and asks, “What are you mad about?” It’s a fair question. Lindsay backtracks, claiming she only brought it up because she’d heard Lil was saying otherwise. But even Lindsay seems to recognize she’s lost this round. She thanks Carl for showing her the “receipts,” and the rest of the table breathes a sigh of relief. The fight had a clear beginning, middle, and end — all in one dinner.

After the meal, Paige, Amanda, and Ciara gather in Ciara’s bed (as they often do) to debrief. Paige observes something new: Lindsay was shut down, something they’ve rarely seen. But how did it come to this?

Turns out, Gaby unknowingly played a role in setting this drama in motion. At the Soft Bar launch party, Gaby and Imrul had talked to Lil, who casually mentioned Carl met her parents at a soccer game last summer. Gaby, missing the context, relayed this to Lindsay as if Carl and Lil were involved last summer. But Lil never said when they started talking—just when Carl met her parents. This small miscommunication snowballed into a full-blown confrontation at Shabbat dinner.

Summer House (S9 E9)Meanwhile, another couple is quietly unraveling in the background. Jesse and Lexi, aka “Lesse,” are facing some early warning signs. On the drive to the Hamptons, Jesse confides in West that Lexi guilted him into introducing her to his family. They’ve only been dating for a month — not even officially boyfriend and girlfriend — yet Lexi is already meeting the Solomons over dinner. Jesse admits he didn’t really want to, but Lexi was upset over the whole “toe-sucking and Ciara flirting” incident, so he gave in.

Later, at Kyle Cooke’s first-ever backyard DJ set (yes, it’s a thing), Jesse reveals even more to Paige and West. He says Lexi noticed he followed several girls on social media and made a comment about it. Feeling guilty, he unfollowed them all. Then Lexi thanked him for unfollowing them — implying she’d been tracking his activity too. Jesse brushes it off, but Paige jumps in with a reality check. She says this is typical “26-year-old-girl energy” and reminds Jesse how common this kind of behavior is at that age.

It’s a subtle red flag. Paige notes that Jesse and Lexi have already had major fights — and they’re just a few weeks in. If it’s this tough now, what will it look like months down the road?

Back at the house, things end on a lighter note. Paige and Ciara collapse out of a hammock in a hilarious moment that would’ve earned applause on America’s Funniest Home Videos. Sitting down at a picnic table, they switch gears and talk about Craig, Paige’s boyfriend. Paige shares more about her doubts. She feels like she has to dim her light to make Craig feel comfortable. Craig wants a traditional life in Charleston, which doesn’t match Paige’s vision at all. The future of their relationship hangs in the balance.

By the end of the episode, the tension from dinner still lingers, but the group is trying to reset. Some relationships are growing, others are cracking, and everyone’s figuring out where they stand.
