Power Book III: Raising Kanan Episode 1 Recap

It is well-known that Kanan is involved in dr# g’s dealing. Raising Kanan exposes the true culprit. Kanan’s mother Raq Thomas (Patina Miller), is a dr#g kingpin, a respectful woman who has earned her respect. Her sole purpose in everything she does is to support her family and her son. Lou-Lou (Malcolm Mays), Marvin (London Brown), and Kanan are her two brothers. They remain loyal to their family, despite their differing perspectives.

His mother watches to ensure her young son applies the knowledge she imparts. She gives her child a sock stuffed with batteries so that he can fight off the playground bullies (Sound Track “Can You Run It Like This”). Raq attempts to change gears later, as Kanan (Mekai Curtis) becomes a highly intelligent high school student with endless opportunities. Raq and her principal want Kanan tested into an elite magnet school to ensure admission into a prestigious college. Raq argues that Kanan has learned from her how to defend himself on the streets. Raq hopes Kanan, now that he is 15 years old in 1991, will be street-smart and book-savvy, but most importantly, free from crime.

The situation is made more complicated by the fact that the boy Kanan who shoots and kills is also his romantic rival for Davina (Lovie Simone) the girl Kanan has been lusting after for many years. Power fans get to see Kanan, Jukebox (Gloria Manning), and their relationship as cousin-siblings. They love and support one another despite all odds. This is particularly poignant and heartbreaking as Jukebox is killed by Kanan, an adult.
