Is Mandy Patinkin’s Rufus Cotesworth based on a Real Detective?

“Death and Other Details,” on Hulu a drama series that has captured viewers’ attention with its unique mix of old-fashioned police elements and new-fashioned storylines. The plot of “Death and Other Details” takes place on a fancy cruise ship owned by the rich Collier family. It’s a classic murder mystery. Rufus Cotesworth, who calls himself the “world’s greatest detective,” is called in to solve a murder that happens at a party for patriarch Lawrence Collier’s upcoming retirement. As the probe goes on, Keith Trubitsky, the victim, admits to more and more lies.

Violett Beane‘s character, Imogene Scott, is an important part of the police duo. Her past is linked to Cotesworth’s failed attempt to solve the murder of her mother many years ago. One interesting thing about “Death and Other Details” is the character of Rufus Cotesworth, who is played by Mandy Patinkin.  Classic detectives are used as inspiration for the show. But is Rufus Cotesworth based on a real detective?

Is Rufus Cotesworth based on a Real Detective?

No, Mandy Patinkin’s Character Rufus Cotesworth is not based on a real detective. Rufus Cotesworth is a character made up by the show’s writers, Mike Weiss and Heidi Cole McAdams. Famous detectives like Hercule Poirot and Sherlock Holmes are used as motivation for the show’s clever twists on detective story tropes. To honor the likes of Agatha Christie’s Poirot and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Holmes, they created a detective who stands on the shoulders of those greats. Rudlus Cotesworth, on the other hand, is not a figure from a true crime or detective story.

These people in charge of the show have purposely made up a character out of thin air and given him all the traits of a classic gentleman detective. As an opening, Cotesworth is shown to be a super-smart detective who has never been stuck on a case he couldn’t solve. Fans of the genre will recognize this trope. His claim to be the “world’s greatest detective” puts him in the same class as legendary fictional detectives.

Even though his background is made up, Cotesworth is not exactly the same as the people who came before him. The show brings the character to life by giving him a long background and personal ties. The history between Cotesworth and Imogene Scott gives him more depth, and his connection to the cases makes him different from the more detached classic detectives. Even though he gets ideas from famous agents from books and movies, he stays in the realm of fiction.
