Lynne Knight Murder Case: Who Killed Her?

Her boyfriend Richard Frank had described her as gregarious, attractive, and a sports fanatic; nevertheless, her gruesome murder at her apartment in August 1979 put the lie to those characterizations.  When police were called after hearing a scream, they discovered Lynne’s body with more than 15 stab wounds, a slashed breast, and a severed femoral artery. The deep slice around Lynne’s naked neck as she lay in bed was the most unsettling part. They found the unorthodox murder weapon, which was fashioned from a broom or mop handle and a wire. There were no initial clues or suspects, although it’s thought that Lynne recognized her attacker.

 Lynne interviewed her close friends, coworkers, acquaintances, and ex-boyfriends as part of her inquiry. Semen samples were discovered on Lynne, but at the time, forensics weren’t sophisticated enough to tell who they belonged to. Richard Frank was first suspected, but he was cleared. Police interrogated another ex-boyfriend, Douglas Gordon Bradford, who made several damaging admissions; however, it took nearly three decades to gather enough evidence against him to press charges. Two sperm samples were found on the body of murdered Lynne Knight, but the technology wasn’t mature enough to determine who was responsible at the time. In order to find clues, the police interviewed Lynne’s friends, acquaintances, and ex-boyfriends. Lynne’s male acquaintances were mostly athletes, and she’d dated Richard Frank before. Before departing for the hospital early the next morning, on August 30, Lynne prepared dinner for her ex-lover Joe Giarrusso on their reunion water skiing trip. Joe claimed that the last time he saw Lynne alive was when she went to bed at 11 p.m. on August 29.

Due to the mutilation of his fingers, Joe was a prime suspect in the murder, but he was eventually cleared after he passed a polygraph and gave an alibi. After Lynne and her ex-boyfriend Douglas Gordon Bradford got into an argument and threw a borrowed lamp over their heads, Richard reported the incident to the police. Investigators have focused on Douglas as a suspect because Lynne’s sister Donna claimed to get a note from Lynne about breaking up with Douglas and him not attending her wedding.

After his DNA matched the semen samples taken from Lynne’s body, Douglas was arrested and convicted of her murder. For his crime, he was given a life sentence. This case illustrates the need for a thorough investigation and the collection of witness information in order to solve crimes. The combined efforts of investigators and witnesses helped secure the guilty party’s conviction despite the limitations of the time’s forensic technology.

The residence of Douglas Gordon Bradford was examined by a Cold Case Unit detective in 2007 and a wire matching the description used to make his homemade garrote weapon was found. Douglas was arrested in 2009, prosecuted and convicted in 2014, and given a 26-year to life sentence despite a lack of direct evidence. Lynne and her family were able to get justice thanks to the work of the police in gathering evidence and bringing the criminal to justice. California Men’s Colony is located in San Luis Obispo County, and Douglas Gordon Bradford is now spending his time there.
