Justified: City Primeval Season 1 Episode 1 Recap

In the episode, Raylan and his daughter Willa are on a road trip. Because of her problematic behavior, his daughter Willa is taken to a conversion therapy camp. When their car is hit from behind by two thieves who are trying to steal it. Raylan successfully repels the assailants and carries on with their journey. They stop at a camp for Willa receiving conversion therapy along the road, but they quickly realize they were too late.

Raylan makes the choice to transport the would-be carjackers to Detroit, where an arrest warrant has been issued for them. After that, he is invited to work with the Detroit Police Department on a task force looking into an attempted assassination of Judge Alvin Guy played by Keith David, who Raylan just had a disagreement with in court.

While this is going on, Clement Mansell (Boyd Holbrook) returns to Detroit and meets up with his lover Sandy Stanton (Adelaide Clemens) and Sweetie (Vondie Curtis-Hall), the proprietor of a local pub. In a distant house where they find evidence and a tunnel related to the attempted assassination. Throughout the episode, Raylan’s relationships with lawyer Carolyn Wilder (Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor) and Judge Guy become increasingly contentious. He is thrown in jail after Carolyn exposes flaws in his testimony.

However, issues emerge when Mansell visits Sweety’s bar and discovers a concealed pistol. Raylan tries to reason with bomber Barry as the PD approaches his house, but things get out of hand when one of the cops hurts Barry. Willa implores Raylan to take them to Harlan County because the case seems to have been solved.

Unbeknownst to Raylan, Mansell meets Judge Guy by chance and gets into a road rage incident that results in a physical altercation.  The plot darkens when Mansell engages in a high-speed chase with Judge Guy, murdering both of them along with his helper Rose Doyle (Rae Gray). The attempt on Judge Guy’s life is ultimately foiled. When Mansell takes Judge Guy’s notepad, the authorities are forced to reevaluate their presumptions and look into the motivation for the attempted assassination. The judge’s girlfriend, who was acting as a confidential informant, is later pursued by him and killed as well.

When Raylan and the PD arrive on the scene, they notice that the judge’s notebook is missing and that there may be a connection between the latest double homicide and the earlier vehicle bombing. They wonder what they could have overlooked during their investigation. With this fresh twist, the episode comes to a close, leaving the audience in suspense about what will happen next.
