Is The Good Nurse a True Story

Yes! “The Good Nurse,” is a true story. The tight thriller, directed by Tobias Lindholm and set to debut on Netflix in the fall, is based on Charles Graeber’s 2013 best-selling book The Good Nurse: A True Story of Medicine, Madness, and Murder. The Good Nurse promises to convey Loughren’s bravery with the darkness of Cullen’s narrative and the system that permitted it. It not only examines the valiant lengths Loughren took to assist in catching Cullen but also how Cullen managed to elude law enforcement for so long.

Chastain and Redmayne both attended “nursing school,” where they watched videos of their real-life counterparts and read Graeber’s book. In his preparation for the role of Cullen, Redmayne found the book to be an especially helpful resource.

According to Jessica Chastain in an interview with Vanity Fair, “There have been a lot of shows and movies about true-crime events that I find could be a bit vulgar—there’s a sensationalism of violence and of aggression.”

True crime, according to Chastain, “I wonder if maybe true crime is interesting because it makes us feel connected to others, it makes us question ourselves.” She continued, “It makes us want to look out for others, and check on our neighbors. Hopefully, true crime in some sense creates a sense of empathy and connectedness to all of us.”
