How does The Flash [2023] betray Wonder Woman, played by Gal Gadot?

Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, who appears in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), has occasionally been objectified and the target of misogyny. An illustration of this may be found in the movie “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” when Bruce Wayne (played by Ben Affleck) remarks on Wonder Woman’s outfit and her attractiveness as well as her cunning personality. Diana is reduced to a sexual object in this scenario, which also feeds prejudices about her.

Wonder Woman has a brief cameo in the film The Flash,” but regrettably the director decides to continue objectifying her. There is an upskirt shot, which is an unnecessary and rude representation. Furthermore, Barry Allen (aka The Flash) may only discuss sex in Wonder Woman’s company while under the effect of the Lasso of Truth, further objectifying her. These situations disregard the development in Patty Jenkins’ movies when Wonder Woman is shown to be a fully developed character.

In addition, other DCEU movies like “Justice League” and Shazam! Fury of the Gods also contribute to Wonder Woman’s objectification. In “Justice League,” Aquaman makes lewd remarks about Wonder Woman’s beauty while under the influence of the Lasso of Truth, encouraging objectification. Similarly to this, Billy Batson, the lead character in “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” is sidetracked by his affection for Wonder Woman and once again treats her as a sexual object.

It is clear from these examples of objectification and abuse that Wonder Woman’s persona is neither appreciated nor understood. Even though Patty Jenkins tried to portray Wonder Woman in her films in a more complex way, there is still a long way to go in terms of how women are portrayed in superhero films. Instead of objectifying women based solely on their beauty, attention should be directed toward highlighting their many talents and characteristics.
