‘H IS FOR HAWK’ FILMING BEGINS: CLAIRE FOY AND BRENDAN GLEESON LEAD THE CAST

Good news for people who like movies based on books and true stories: the long-awaited movie “H Is For Hawk” has started filming in Wales and London this October. This project, which stars Claire Foy and Brendan Gleeson, will adapt Helen Macdonald’s award-winning memoir into a movie.

Filmed by the talented Philippa Lowthorpe, “H Is For Hawk” is about a falconer named Helen Macdonald who trains a goshawk named Mabel to deal with the sudden death of her father. Claire Foy plays Macdonald, who explores the wild, untamed mind of the hawk, following in the footsteps of T.H. White’s famous book “The Goshawk.”

Claire Foy, who is known for playing Queen Elizabeth II in Netflix’s “The Crown,” plays Helen Macdonald, a complicated and emotional character. Brendan Gleeson, who is known for his many roles in movies like “In Bruges” and the “Harry Potter” series, will join Foy in the production and give it more depth and weight. A strong group of producers, including Dede Gardner, Lena Headey, and Jeremy Kleiner, are behind the project. Emma Donoghue, who wrote “Room,” wrote the screenplay.

H Is For Hawk Filming Locations

The movie, which began on October 7, 2024, takes place in both the beautiful countryside of Wales and the lively cityscape of London. These places will make a great background for the movie’s themes of nature, solitude, and getting better.

“H Is For Hawk” is based on Helen Macdonald’s memoir from 2014, which won the Samuel Johnson Prize and the Costa Book of the Year award. The memoir tells the story of Macdonald’s year-long effort to train a northern goshawk as a way to deal with her deep grief over the death of her father. A well-known photojournalist named Alisdair Macdonald was her father. He died suddenly in 2007. The book not only talks about her own journey, but it also includes parts of T.H. White’s life, which gives the story even more depth.

Helen Macdonald’s work in film and media goes well with her writing. Her knowledge of birds was shown on the BBC Four show “Birds Britannia” in 2010. In 2017, she was in the documentary “H Is for Hawk: A New Chapter,” which was about training a goshawk and added to her memoir. Macdonald also hosted the 2020 documentary “The Hidden Wilds of the Motorway,” which looked at the wildlife that lives along Britain’s highways. The other project she worked on with Sarah Wood was “10 X Murmuration,” which was shown at the Brighton Festival in 2015.
