Grey’s Anatomy Season 20, Episode 5 Recap

Helm helps Mika study at the beginning of the show, while Simone continues to avoid Lucas. Jo finds out that her period is late, but before she can tell Link about it, they are called to help Bailey and Owen get ready for an upcoming trauma. People at a white-coat party were hurt when a deck on the second floor collapsed. One of the patients, Simone’s, tried to get out of bed, which made Simone and Blue look quickly for him.

Sophia, a medical student, is in the worst shape of all of them because a piece of wood cut through her spinal cord. Owen and Amelia decide to remove the foreign object, and the surgery seems to have gone well thanks to Lucas’s encouragement of Amelia’s determination. At the same time, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) finds out that Nick took their son to the hospital in Boston for appendicitis, which makes her sad. She tries to get a flight out of Seattle right away but ends up on a plane with Richard. He talks about how worried she is about making mistakes by bringing up Derek’s death.

In another room, Winston is busy with his divorce papers while he sees Gilbert, a patient with a fast heart rate. The nurse taking care of the patient, Jules, is also distracted by the babysitter hired to keep Gilbert quiet. Winston is able to help Gilbert after his surgery, and he later says sorry to Jules for not being his best self at work. Eddie, Simone’s patient, is on the roof, thinking about jumping, when Blue and she arrive. With Ben’s help, they are able to calm Eddie down, and he walks off the ledge to talk about how broken he feels.

Link is relieved when Jo first thinks she’s not pregnant after taking a pregnancy test. But the test results were wrong. The next morning, Jo tells Link that she is not pregnant but does want to have another kid with him. He agrees, but needs some time to get used to the idea.  At the end of the episode, Amelia and Owen say that Sophia might be able to fully recover. Mika finds out Levi’s choice about her patient assignment, and Winston tells Teddy that she can go back to work the next day. In a touching moment, Lucas joins Simone in bed to calm and support her.
