Great Expectations Episodes 1 and 2 Recap

FX’s six-part adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic, helmed by Peaky Blinders‘ Steven Knight, follows Pip’s (Tom Sweet as a youngster and Fionn Whitehead as an adult) frank education as he strives to join the upper classes of Victorian England. Unfortunately, his tutor is the cruel and ghastly Miss Havisham (Olivia Colman), who has improperly trained her lovely adopted ward Estella (Shalom Brune-Franklin). The charmingly named Mr. Pumblechook, the intermediary who introduces little Pip to the ogre in ragged bridal garb, is played by Matt Berry. In the event that you were unable to see Great Expectations Episodes 1 and 2, the conclusion of the show is detailed below (tvacute.com).

Great Expectations Episode 1 Recap

In the first episode, which takes place in London in 1839, Pip is shown attempting suicide. The story then jumps back in time seven years, to when Pip was younger and struggling to make ends meet. The action then turns to show two inmates, Maywitch and Compeyson, battling against each other in the next scene. Compeyson is able to light the jail on fire and flee the jail, but not before a guard has to talk him down first. As a result, Maywitch is killed in the fire.

Pip goes to his parent’s cemetery site in the middle of the night after getting into an argument with Sara (Hayley Squires) throughout the day. There, he meets Maywitch, who requests that the young Pip bring him some food. Pip agrees to do so. Maywitch also warns him that he will kill his sister if he does not comply with his demands or if he reveals this information to anyone else. Pip complies with the request, but with some reluctance. Compeyson makes an appearance right after Pip fulfills his pledge, at this point, Pip is questioned by Compeyson, which causes Pip to lie and say that he has not seen Maywitch.

When they get back to their house, Mr. Pumblechuck, played by Matt Berry, sits down to supper with Sara and confesses that Miss Havisham had inquired about Pip. Miss Havisham had taken in a lonely young girl and raised her as her own. He had chosen Pip for this task since they had been unable to locate a boy from the proper class. In spite of Sara’s elation at the prospect of receiving payment for Pip’s visit to Miss Havisham’s, the guards soon barge into the home in their search for the fugitives from the prison. Eventually, they come to the two criminals squaring off against one another in the muck. Following all that has transpired, Pip finally makes his way to see Madam Havisham, accompanied by Mr. Pumblechuck.

Great Expectations Episode 2 Recap

At the beginning of the second episode, Estella and Pip are forced to participate in a game by Madam Havisham. Soon after, Pip and Estella begin conversing with one another, and Estella reveals that in order to leave the mansion, she requires the assistance of a wealthy guy. She calls another child named Herbert and informs him that Pip was in adore with her, which accidentally causes them to compete for her attention because they both want her. After that, Estella gives Pip some advice on how to behave like a guy in the years to come. Pip begins to describe his day with Estella to Sara after a short scene in which a lawyer is shown attempting to prevent the death of his client.

The full introduction of Biddy is going to happen very soon in Great Expectations episode 2. Pip has high hopes for her as the intelligent girl he can use to win Estella over. When Pip visits Miss Havisham’s home, she instructs him on proper etiquette for interacting with ladies. It was revealed that Pip was turning 18 years old, and Miss Havisham had prepared a unique present for him. Soon after, she leads him upstairs and reveals to him that Mrs. Givens is going to make love to him. She also advises him that in order to be considered a gentleman, he must be skilled in a number of activities.

Later on the same day, Miss Havisham invites Pip to accompany her to a society gala, where she also pursues a romantic relationship with a French woman. Pip, on the other hand, chooses to spend the evening with Estella and dances alongside her. Near the close of the second episode of Great Expectations, Miss Havisham inquires of Pip regarding his feelings for Estella. Pip makes his way back to Miss Havisham’s house at the conclusion of this chapter of Great Expectations, only to be informed by Estella that he has reached the end of his formal education. Pip, who is still young at this point, is left bewildered and expresses his affection for her.
