Is Grave [Sunnycreek Orphanage] a Real Place in Netflix’s The Tearsmith?

The Tearsmith on Netflix, also known as Fabbricante di lacrime, is a moving story about loss, strength, and the lasting power of human connection. Based on Erin Doom’s book of the same name, the movie is directed by Alessandro Genovesi and shows the life of Nica Dover (Caterina Ferioli), a young child whose story takes place inside the sad walls of Sunnycreek Orphanage, which is so sad that it’s called the Grave.

Nica’s journey starts with a terrible event: her parents died in a car crash. She hits the harsh truth of Sunnycreek hard because of this loss. There, she feels invisible and alone. Nica holds on to hope, even though things are hard for her. She dreams of being adopted and having her own family one day. When she turns 17, that day comes, and the caring Milligans Anna (Roberta Rovelli) and Norman (Orlando Cinque)  invite her to live with them. Nica is happy, but it’s not as happy when she hears that Rigel, who used to be her enemy at the shelter, has also been adopted by the same family.

Nica’s sudden happiness is in danger because Rigel Wilde (Simone Baldasseroni) is around, as she struggles with the complicated parts of her past and how she feels about him changing. Nica and Rigel have had a rough past, but they find something they have in common as they deal with their trauma and form a deep bond that goes beyond their problems.

The story of The Tearsmith is based on strong emotions and personal growth, but it also makes you think about what happens at Sunnycreek Orphanage. Is it based on a real spot?

Is Grave [Sunnycreek Orphanage] a Real Orphanage in Netflix’s The Tearsmith?

In Netflix’s movie The Tearsmith, Sunnycreek Orphanage, also known as the Grave, is not a real orphanage. It’s a fictional place created for the story. The town of Sunnycreek is made up by Erin Doom in her mind. Doom’s study into the lives of kids in foster care and orphanages, on the other hand, helped him create Sunnycreek. This gave it a real feel and emotional depth.

Doom shows through Nica and Rigel’s story the problems kids in foster care face and how important it is for people to care about, understand, and help them. The story of Sunnycreek may not be true, but the way it changed Nica and Rigel’s lives is a powerful warning of the problems many kids in similar situations face.

Netflix’s The Tearsmith Filming Location

The beautiful cities of Rome, Ravenna, and Pescara were the primary settings for “The Tearsmith” filming in Italy. The Casa generalizia Fratelli Scuole Cristiane in Rome was used as the characters’ school, which added to the mood of the movie. As the Grave home, the Complesso del Buon Pastore in Rome was used instead. This gave the scenes more historical depth.

The Vecchio Ponte Ferroviario In Ferro was used as a background for cityscapes in Pescara, showing off the city’s sandy beaches and long past. The film’s use of Pescara was approved by the city government, which wanted to bring more tourists and attention to the city.

With its UNESCO World Heritage Sites and beautiful nature scenery, Ravenna made for a beautiful setting. Lido di Dante was used for shooting. It is known for its peaceful atmosphere and beautiful beaches, which made it a great place to film beach scenes at sunset and at night.
