Nando was born on December 9, 1949, in Montevideo, Uruguay, to Seler Parrado and Eugenia Dolgay. He spent his early years there. He grew up in the Carrasco neighborhood and went to Stella Maris College, where he played rugby for the Old Christians, an alumni team. In the Andes crash, his mother and younger sister Susana died, which was a terrible blow to his family.
The story takes a sad turn when the plane bringing the Uruguayan rugby team crashes in the Cordillera de los Andes at an amazing 18,000 feet. After the event, the people had to deal with unimaginable problems. Nando Parrado and his friends were trapped and desperate for 72 days before they were found and saved. It gives a moving picture of how terrible fate was and how their unbreakable spirit kept them going.
When Nando got back from the mountains, he was still very upset about the deaths of his sister and mother. Even though he started out helping his dad with his business, he finally went his own way and found comfort in sports car racing. To fill the void left by tragedy, he found meaning in racing, which led to a great career as a professional race car driver. After getting married, Nando made the important choice to stop racing professionally and take over his dad’s hardware store with his sister and brother-in-law. For him, this was the start of his business career, which led to the creation of several great companies.
In addition to his business career, Nando Parrado became a motivational speaker. He used his experience in the Andes to help other people deal with psychological stress. He wrote the book “Miracle in the Andes” with another author in 2006. It was a highly personal look at the tragedy that focused on leadership, teamwork, and strength.
