Ghosts Season 4 Episode 22 Recap: When the final episode of GHOSTS Season 4 begins, it doesn’t take long for a shadow of darkness to creep over the lighthearted Woodstone Manor. What starts as a seemingly joyous occasion quickly unravels into chaos, heartbreak, and a deadly new twist—one that threatens to drag one of the living into the depths of hell. A celebration turns into a battle of souls, secrets come to light, and one ghost’s return marks a turning point that could change everything. This finale delivers shocking revelations, unexpected romance, and a cliffhanger that will keep fans questioning what’s next for Sam, Jay, and their spectral housemates.

Let’s break down everything that happened in the intense GHOSTS Season 4 finale.

The finale episode, titled The Devil Went Down to Woodstone“, opens on what should have been a joyful high point for the central couple. But as with most things at Woodstone, even a simple book launch party turns into a supernatural minefield—this time involving a Puritan ghost, a disgraced family ancestor, and a contract with hell itself.

🎉SAM AND JAY: A SECRET PARTY

As the episode begins, Sam (Rose McIver) is bubbling with excitement. Her long-awaited book—co-written with Isaac (Brandon Scott Jones) about his life and legacy—is being launched with a big party by her publisher. But there’s a catch: the event is in New York City, and Sam fears Isaac might be hurt knowing the party is happening without him.

Sam and Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) try to keep the party a secret from the ghosts by cooking up an alibi. But the plan backfires when Pete (Richie Moriarty) returns from Chicago and congratulates Sam on the launch—news that spread accidentally from Jay’s sister Bela (Punam Patel) to her boyfriend Kyle and then to Pete.

Realizing there’s no way to keep the secret any longer, Sam confesses the truth to Isaac, who is clearly disappointed. Wanting to make things right, Sam convinces the publisher to move the party to their inn at Woodstone, allowing Isaac to attend and celebrate his own story.

Jay, meanwhile, is thrilled to receive unexpected interest in his food. A new publicist—Brent—has been promoting the restaurant and bringing it attention. What Jay doesn’t know is that Brent isn’t a publicist at all. He’s Elias Woodstone (Matt Walsh), the infamous ghost from Season 1 who’s now taken human form as an emissary of the devil.

👻PATIENCE RETURNS: THE PURITAN GHOST SMELLS TROUBLE

As the party preparations begin, a serious wrench is thrown into the works—Patience (Mary Holland), the Puritan ghost, arrives after sensing evil in the air. She’s deeply disturbed to learn the party is centered around a vampire-themed book and instantly deems it a satanic ritual.

Sam tries to reason with her, even promising to cancel the party. But Patience insists that she still senses evil and wants to investigate further. To distract her, the ghosts suggest she explore the main house instead of the barn where the party will be held.

What follows is a calculated ghostly misdirection to keep Patience occupied.

💘 ALBERTA’S SECRET AND A DAY OF HUMILIATION

In the mansion, Alberta (Danielle Pinnock) confides in Hetty (Rebecca Wisocky) that she’s developed romantic feelings for Pete. She even had a vivid dream about him that left her flustered and confused. Hetty swears to keep the secret—until the ghosts bring Patience into the house and need a diversion.

In a moment of panic, Hetty tells Patience about Alberta’s “improper thoughts.” Seeing an opportunity to purify the space, Patience organizes a “day of humiliation” for Alberta.

What Alberta doesn’t know is that Pete walks in on the entire confession. Embarrassed and caught off guard, Pete leaves Woodstone for two days without saying a word, leaving Alberta heartbroken.

🧛 THE PARTY BEGINS… AND PATIENCE EXPLODES

Despite the distractions, the launch party kicks off in the barn. Isaac is thrilled, the crowd is engaged, and Sam begins reading from the book. But Patience soon uncovers the ghosts’ plan to trick her. Thanks to Bela accidentally spilling the beans on a phone call, Patience marches into the party in a fury.

In a dramatic twist, Patience begins using her ghost powers—causing chaos and what appears to be a supernatural disturbance in front of the entire party crowd. Thinking quickly, Jay announces it’s a performance art piece meant to promote the vampire book. The guests cheer, believing it’s a clever publicity stunt.

😈 THE TRUTH ABOUT BRENT—AKA ELIAS

The real danger, however, lurks quietly at the edge of the celebration. When a food critic compliments Jay and mentions that his publicist—Brent—helped promote the restaurant, Jay realizes something is very wrong. The name Brent triggers recognition.

It’s then revealed: Elias Woodstone, once thought banished, has returned and now walks among the living in human form. As a devil’s emissary, he tricked Jay into signing a contract. Not for PR services—but for his soul.

Jay learns that when he dies, his soul will belong to Elias—and by extension, the devil. Worse still, Elias doesn’t want to wait around. In a chilling moment, Elias tries to kill Jay by causing a stage light to fall on him at the party.

Jay narrowly escapes, but the threat is now very real. His life—and afterlife—are in grave danger.

❤️A NEW COUPLE EMERGES: PETE AND ALBERTA

As the dust settles, Pete finally returns to Woodstone after disappearing. Alberta tries to brush off her previous confession, expecting rejection. But Pete reveals he took time away to break things off with his longtime crush, Donna.

The finale closes with Pete and Alberta sharing a passionate kiss—solidifying a budding romance between two ghosts who’ve been orbiting each other for seasons. What started as an awkward dream has now blossomed into something real.

🗣️WHAT THE CREATORS SAY: SEASON 5 IS GOING DARKER

Executive producers Joe Port and Joe Wiseman recently spoke out to variety  about the finale and what it means for the show’s future.

“We always like to end on a cliffhanger,” Wiseman said, adding that putting Jay’s life in jeopardy raised the stakes significantly. The idea of Elias being able to physically interact with the living adds a new layer of threat. “His life and afterlife are at stake,” Wiseman emphasized.

Port explained that focusing on Jay’s storyline helps anchor the ghosts’ hijinks with real-world consequences. “Utkarsh is so good at portraying Jay’s frustration. He tries to do the right thing, love his wife, and help the ghosts—but it always backfires,” Port said.

As for Elias’ role in Season 5, the showrunners hope to see more of Matt Walsh. “He plays a hate-able character you can’t help but love to hate,” Wiseman explained.

Port also mentioned that they wanted to make the soul-selling plot more urgent by introducing the danger of Elias actively trying to kill Jay. “We wanted a reason to make this feel real and scary—so now, Elias isn’t just waiting. He’s hunting,” he said.

The fallout from Elias’s return and the soul contract will shape the tone and stakes for Season 5. Jay and Sam must now find a way to protect Jay, recover his soul, and prevent Elias from succeeding in his deadly mission.

As one chapter closes at Woodstone, another opens—with even more danger, romance, and ghostly drama. With Elias walking among the living and Jay’s fate hanging in the balance, Season 5 promises to take Ghosts to haunting new heights.
