Is Felix Cameron’s Eli Bell Based on a Real Person?

“Boy Swallows Universe,” is a story that explores the complicated life of a young boy in Brisbane in the 1980s. This Netflix show, based on Trent Dalton‘s best-selling Australian book, promises to be emotional as it deals with family problems, crime, and the search for oneself.  Felix Cameron plays Eli Bell, a young man who struggles with the problems that come with growing up in a broken home. The show is a moving coming-of-age story that takes place in the underworld of Brisbane.  One interesting thing that often gets people interested is how real the characters are. When Felix Cameron plays Eli Bell, the question comes up: Is Eli based on a real person in Trent Dalton’s life? tvacute delves into the details.

Is Felix Cameron’s Eli Bell Based on a Real Person?

Yes, the main character in “Boy Swallows Universe,” Eli Bell, is based on the author’s own experiences and emotions from his challenging childhood in 1980s Brisbane. Dalton freely admits that the book is based on his own life, and Eli’s character is based on how Dalton grew up. The book goes into detail about Dalton’s real-life problems, his family relationships, and the effects of important people in his life, such as his criminal stepfather and a family friend who was accused of murder. Even though some parts of the book are made up, Eli’s story is based on the author’s own life. This makes “Boy Swallows Universe” a powerful look at real-life battles and emotional truths.
Dalton
In interviews, Dalton says that his earliest memories are all about love, especially the love he had for Arthur “Slim” Halliday, his criminal stepfather and someone who was close to the family.   Dalton talks freely about the problems his family had, like drug abuse, and domestic violence, and how hard it is to fall in love with someone who has a bad reputation. One of the most important themes in Eli Bell’s story is how his stepfather was taken away by the cops. The author says that the book is partly based on his or her own life and stresses that it is a 50/50 mix of fact and fiction. Dalton finds that writing helps him deal with his problems.
Dalton, the youngest of four sons, was born in Ipswich, Queensland. Brassall was his childhood home with his mother and stepfather. Both sold heroin and were imprisoned. His mother was imprisoned for two years for cocaine smuggling when he was seven. Dalton stayed with his paternal grandparents for 12 months. He then lived with his father in a Housing Commission property in Bracken Ridge, a northern Brisbane suburb. Dalton and a sibling lived with his mother for a few years in their teens. Dalton studied journalism at the University of Southern Queensland and the Queensland University of Technology after high school.
When Dalton got a job as a writer for the free weekly magazine Brisbane News in 2000, it was his first job in the news.  His path through life took him to The Courier-Mail. As of August 2021, he is a staff writer for The Weekend Australian Magazine. During his time as a journalist, Dalton improved his story-telling skills and eventually moved into creative fiction. He and his wife Fiona have two daughters.
“Boy Swallows Universe,” Dalton’s semi-autobiographical book that came out in 2018, was the turning point in his writing career. The book got good reviews and was on the shortlist for the coveted Miles Franklin Award. Because the book was so popular, it was turned into a Netflix series, which allowed more people to see Dalton’s story. The main character in the book, Eli Bell, is a lot like Dalton’s own journey, and there are aspects of the story that are quite similar to parts of Dalton’s own life.
