FBI True Episode 1: Branch Davidian siege in Waco, Texas

In Waco, Texas, the ATF attempts to raid the home of an armed religious group, but things quickly go wrong. The FBI needs to come up with a plan to terminate the hostage situation. For months, news of the federal agents’ confrontation with the Branch Davidians outside Waco, Texas, dominated the news cycle. Seventy-five people, including children, lost their lives during the siege, and the experience altered the views of several Americans toward their federal government.

On February 28, 1993, the Bureau of Alcohol,  confronted roughly 130 members of the secretive Branch Davidian sect outside the Mount Carmel complex where they were living. Heavy shooting erupted when authorities attempted to invade the 77-acre compound and apprehend leader David Koresh. Over the course of the gunfight, four ATF agents and six Branch Davidians were killed.

After the botched operation, a standoff ensued for a total of 51 days. Despite being encircled by tanks, armored vehicles, and over 600 federal officials, Koresh and the majority of his followers remained inside the property. On April 19, 1993, a massive fire broke out at the compound, putting an end to the stalemate. Nine persons were the only ones to make it out alive. What transpired in Waco has been criticized as a slaughter by some.

The incident prompted the FBI and ATF to conduct an internal investigation. The Austin American Statesman reported at the time that there were twenty-four separate special reaction teams, each with varying levels of training and resources. The ATF simplified its training after Waco to focus on executing warrants and rescuing hostages. The FBI has combined its tactical and negotiation teams into one organization called the Critical Incident Response Group.
