Before Season 1 Episode 2 Recap

At the start of Before’s second episode, Eli is thinking about what the strange farmhouse that keeps showing up in his dreams and in Noah’s drawings means. As Eli thinks about this, he has a scary dream in which Noah stabs him in the neck and talks to him in Dutch. But Eli quickly figures out it was all a dream. Noah only replies in English, “I wanna go home,” when Eli tries to talk to him in Dutch. This makes it even more confusing to figure out if Noah is —really connected to these strange events or if it’s all in Eli’s head.

Eli wants to find out what’s wrong with Noah so he suggests that a full bloodwork panel be done to see if anything strange can be found. Noah, on the other hand, is still in the hospital and is being closely watched because he stabbed a classmate with a pencil in the last episode. The child Noah hit is still getting better after losing a lot of blood, and this makes Eli have another horrible vision. He imagines a bathtub full of blood-which makes him almost pass out.

When Barb (Maria Dizzia), Eli’s daughter, comes to his house in a panic, things get worse. It scares her that Eli’s house is a mess that looks like it was hurt in an attack. This happened because Eli lost control in the last episode. Barb talks to him because she is worried and angry. Eli quickly tells her that no one was hurt and that they just didn’t understand each other. Barb tells him she’s sorry and says she’s been nervous ever since her mother Lynn died. But Eli, who is still emotionally guarded—won’t talk about Lynn’s death in detail and avoids the subject altogether.

Following this, Eli goes back to the hospital to check on Noah. Noah starts to freak out during an MRI scan because he keeps seeing horrifying images of leeches crawling into his skin. Eli quickly stops the procedure because he knows something is very wrong. Even though Noah is having very clear and scary visions, the MRI results don’t show anything out of the ordinary. There is no physical reason for what Noah is seeing. Noah has a birthmark that isn’t round like most others, but there are no other signs that something is physically wrong with the boy.

When Sue Ann (Miriam Shor) a real estate agent, comes to Eli’s house to talk about putting it on the market, he is briefly distracted. Eli isn’t ready to deal with this right now—so he brushes her off and gives her the job. He’s clearly not interested in selling the house because he’s still very sad about Lynn’s death.

After that, Eli talks to Noah’s foster mother about what happened at school. She talks about how Noah acts and says that he often has a face that looks like a ghost. As Eli looks around Noah’s room—he finds sketchy things that make him feel uneasy. The farmhouse that has been showing up in both Noah’s drawings and Eli’s dreams is in all of them. Among the drawings, there is also a shadowy figure that makes Noah even more afraid that something supernatural or mental is wrong with him.

Later, Eli tries a different way to talk to Noah at the hospital. They play a therapeutic game that Eli calls “the mad game.” As they play, each person takes turns adding blocks to a tower while talking about things that make them mad. When Noah talks about “people who hurt other people” during the game, his mood changes. His tone of voice changes, and he scuffs the table out of anger. Suddenly, Noah looked straight at Eli and said, “You know what you did.” This was very scary.

The episode reaches a peak when Noah repeats Eli’s words and starts to scream, which makes Eli shocked and scared. What does Noah really think Eli did? How much of this has to do with the strange things that happened after Lynn died and the visions they both have? Fans are left with more questions than answers as the episode comes to a close because of the rising psychological tension.
