When the gates open in 1883, James Dillard Dutton and his family are on their way to the North. It’s going to be a long and hard journey. The first two episodes of the show do a lot of world-building and introduce us to a lot of different people. “River” is the third episode of “1883.” It will keep up with the caravan led by Shea Brennan, which James Dutton and his family are also a part of. The cowboys know that they are more powerful when they work together because there are many threats on their way to the North. These threats could put innocent lives at risk, so Shea, Thomas, and James will always have to be on the lookout. On the other hand, they might not agree on all of the decisions that they make. It could also take longer to get there because the immigrants aren’t very good at traveling on these kinds of roads.
