At the start of this Vinland Saga episode, the farm hands are gathered together as Thorgil shows up and gives the command to be ready for a fight. With more than 350 warriors at his disposal, Ketil (Hideaki Tezuka) learns that King Canute is the true enemy. Snake, who is present, discusses the tactical decision to reveal the enemy’s identity when everyone is assembled, inspiring the inexperienced farmers.

Does Thorfinn depart with Leif, or not?

Leif and Thorfinn (Yuto Uemura) eventually reunite, but the recent events surrounding Arnheid overwhelm their time together. Leif makes a remark on Thorfinn’s improvement and expresses his relief that things can change. Leif, worried about Arnheid’s health, resolves to help Thorfinn, Einar (Shunsuke Takeuchi), and Arnheid (Mayumi Sako) flee the farm.

While this is going on, Snake’s soldiers are teaching the farmers the art of fighting and archery on the beach. Canute’s fleet snuck up on them, and they were unprepared for the ensuing fight. Several of the farmers are killed when they come under attack from arrows. Canute’s army arrives on shore and quickly seizes control of the coastline. Canute (Kensho Ono) walks barefoot across the countryside and marvels at its natural beauty, expressing his hope that it will be spared from any further bloodshed.

Canute’s messenger delivers a crucial message to Ketil. What exactly does the messenger reveal?

Canute wants to avoid bloodshed, so he sends a messenger to Ketil to offer capitulation. If Ketil and his family are willing to depart and be exiled for ten years, he offers to save the rest of the land. Ketil, infuriated by the proposition, offers a reward for the delivery of Canute’s severed head. Though outnumbered, Snake and his men are shocked to learn that Canute has only 100 elite warriors at his disposal, including his royal guard and the Jomsvikings. Snake knows the farmers don’t stand a chance against these hardened warriors who personify everything bad about war.

While preparing for a fight, Snake recounts his history with Ketil. While serving in the military, he had become close with a Ketil known as the Iron Fist. Snake, however, has learned that the Ketil living on the farm is not the same individual. Snake decides that he and his men need to fight to make up for the easy life they’ve been living on the farm. Ketil ignores Snake’s advice, and the fight ensues.

Thorfinn, Einar, Leif, the other Thorfinn, and Arnheid steal a wagon and flee while wishing Pater, who had helped them, the best of luck. While on the road, Arnheid dreams that she is reunited with her children and that Gardar is there to help them start over as a family. Arnheid gets to spend time with her loved ones one last time. Finally, Thorgil emerges from the river, ready to assault an unguarded Canute from behind, and Olmar laments that he is not his brother.
