The Bear Season 2 Episode 5 Recap

Two songs by The Replacements are played at the beginning of the episode, prompting a conversation about how underappreciated the band is. While Sydney struggles with her timing and palate, Ebra has given up on her culinary training to spend more time smoking cigars by the lake. Tina (Liza Colón-Zayas) is popular among the younger students at her culinary school, but she feels out of place when they invite her to karaoke. As a result of contractors waiting on contractors and permit problems, the restaurant itself is in shambles. When Uncle Jimmy comes to visit, he brings up his worries about the rising prices and the necessity of exerting more oversight.

Carmy and Claire (Molly Gordon) embark on a “driving date” to mail a permit application and end up talking about their shared experiences with loss, their professions, and more. They go to a party together, where they talk to close friends and acquaintances. When Claire confronts Carmy about giving her a bogus number, he opens up about how much he has a crush on her. They go to the restaurant and find Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), Natalie, and Sydney in the middle of an argument over Richie’s theft of electricity to fix the restaurant’s electrical problems. Given the challenges with the food, Sydney is more worried about Carmy maintaining concentration.

In the middle of the mayhem, Carmy and Claire steal a minute together and are ready to kiss when Neil Fak (Matty Matheson) interrupts to convey his delight in their bond. Carmy and Claire ultimately kiss after Neil Fak leaves, and the song “Can’t Hardly Wait” by The Replacements plays in the background. The episode concludes on a sentimental note, highlighting the warmth and closeness of the couple.

In addition, Tina’s endearing nickname for Carmy is “Jeffrey,” Richie is trying to get tickets to see Taylor Swift, the meaning of Coach K remains a mystery, and Richie describes himself as “Van Halen-like,” not the other way around. The soundtrack is rounded off by REM’s “Strange Currencies,” which is included multiple times throughout the show.
