Amazon MGM Studios has revealed a first look at MADDEN, a new sports biopic starring Nicolas Cage as the legendary NFL coach John Madden. The film also stars Christian Bale as Al Davis, the owner of the Oakland Raiders during Madden’s coaching years.
MADDEN is the story of how John Madden went from being poor to becoming one of the most important people in American football. His first big win came in 1976, when he was head coach of the Oakland Raiders and led the team to the Super Bowl. After he stopped coaching, Madden became a TV commentator and quickly became a voice that people all over America knew.
But his influence didn’t stop there. Madden also became the face of one of the most successful video game franchises ever: Madden NFL. The film explores not only his time on the field but also how he became a household name in video games and advertising. According to reports, the movie will focus heavily on the early development of the Madden NFL video game and how Madden became a pop culture figure.
Oscar-nominated director David O. Russell, known for The Fighter, American Hustle, and Silver Linings Playbook, is both writing and directing the film. An earlier version of the script was written by Cambron Clark.
Joining Cage and Bale in the cast is John Mulaney, who plays Trip Hawkins, the founder of Electronic Arts, the company behind the Madden NFL game series. Kathryn Hahn stars as Virginia Madden, John Madden’s wife, while Sienna Miller plays Carol Davis, the wife of Al Davis.
MADDEN is being produced in association with Skydance Sports. The list of producers includes Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Steve Tisch, Jonathan Shukat, David O. Russell, Matthew Budman, and Colin Wilson. Executive producers on the project are David Bloomfield, former NFL player Michael Strahan, and Constance Schwartz-Morini.
