Is Starz’s Dangerous Liaisons Based on a True Story?

It is not a true story; “Dangerous Liaisons” is fiction. An upcoming American historical drama television program called Dangerous Liaisons is based on Pierre Choderlos de Laclos‘s book of the same name. The French novel Les Liaisons dangereuses, published in 1782, served as a major inspiration for Dangerous Liaisons. The original story is around two ex-lovers who became foes after abandoning their morality and pursuing a dangerous vendetta against one another. The original joke becomes a destructive plot over time, forcing the ex-couple to continually take advantage of one another.

The action takes place just before the French Revolution, when the French nobility was at its height and vices were allowed to run rampant. Les Liaisons dangereuses is lauded for bringing up themes of seduction, retribution, and the heinous cruelty shown by their characters, even if the novel mostly centers on the terrible dispute between the ex-lovers. It was regarded as scandalous when it was first published, and its 2022 television adaptation is expected to follow suit. Christopher Hampton adapted Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ Dangerous Liaisons, and Colin Callender and Tony Krantz will serve as executive producers. it was revealed that the series had been ordered and given the go-ahead by Starz, with Harriet Warner serving as the showrunner and writer.

Screen Rant talked to the show’s creator Harriet Warner and executive producer Colin Callender about the inspiration for their original vision for Dangerous Liaisons and how the prequel makes use of frequently underappreciated characters like Victoire and Azolan.

That was a starting point, and then through conversations with Harriet, we were finding a way to tell a story about a young woman navigating the world and trying to get through the day with dignity—sometimes successfully, sometimes not. And that’s something that everyone can relate to.  Harriet Warner said to Screen Rant  I had read that novel a long time ago and loved it; I loved the movie. But as a feminist, I think it was gonna take some work. It was very much a story [told] through men, and I think for me, it was like, “How does this become a kind of feminist tale?” It was rereading the novel and finding the extraordinary Letter 81, which is from the Marquise de Merteuil. It really talks about her as a construct and a creation to navigate and survive in this world, and my interpretation of that was, “Wow, this woman doesn’t feel like she’s part of that world. It feels like she struggles with it and doesn’t share its values.”

Tv fanatic talked to creator and executive producer What motivated them to use these characters in a prequel since this narrative has been the subject of numerous remakes? Colin Callender said,”I began by asking, “What is it about Dangerous Liaisons that has made it continue to be part of the landscape of modern culture, even 300 years after the book was published? What is it about the book that endures, and what could we explore in television over time, with characters, that you couldn’t do with a single movie or a play?”

At the core of it, there are two things. One is that it’s a love story, albeit a fractured and tragic one. But it’s also the story of a woman trying to navigate a man’s world. That’s as relevant today as it was back in the latter part of the 18th century. and that was what I came to Harriet with. Genevieve – Dangerous Liaisons Harriet Warner: Obviously, [I wanted] to work with Colin, who’s such a brilliant man in this industry. He was excited about this project, so I really wanted to find a way to do it.

“We’re very excited to share Harriet Warner’s brilliant vision for season two, which will see our world expand and the relationships between our characters deepen in thrilling, dangerous new ways,” said executive producer Colin Callender.
